Both sides

Had to laugh while reading the letters to the editor last week. As an independent, I like MidWeek because it provides a broad range of opinions. And there, side by side, were two letters - one from a conservative castigating MidWeek for publishing Ariana Huffington’s column, another from a liberal castigating you for publishing Michelle Malkin’s column.

Unlike the cable network that claims the phrase, that really is fair and balanced.

Keep up the good - and independent - work.

Coverage kudos

I think it is commendable that MidWeek chose to report on the Republican Convention, and I am sure many of your readers enjoyed the coverage.

I was amazed that, based on her letter, Pat Blair found reporting the news to be “inappropriate.” Apparently she didn’t realize you were journalists.

I guess we must assume that Ms. Blair only worked to pass the Equal Rights Amendment for women who hold beliefs like hers.

Don’t grumble

I am not often in agreement with the blustery and often bellicose Rick Hamada, but the headline on his column last week says it all: “If You Don’t Vote, Don’t Grumble.”

May I add: Don’t grumble about anything, because as Mr. Hamada rightly points out, the decisions politicians make impact every aspect of your life - from roads and sewers to schools and taxes, not to mention energy policy, the economy and the environment.

Free to vote

Regarding Rick Hamada’s and Dan Boylan’s columns on so few Hawaii people voting:

If you do not vote, you lose my respect because you willingly give up your voice as an American, the dearest freedom for which our brave military have sacrificed, and continue to do so.

Keep religion out

The letter last week on the subject of death with dignity, written by a person I assume is a devout Christian in response to a Bob Jones column, made me want to scream.

We cannot base modern American policy on an ancient religious text full of fairy tales, which is a nice way of saying fabrications and lies.

“Suicide is a sin from which you cannot repent”? Apparently this person believes her god wants humans - his beloved children, right? - to suffer terribly and to be burdens on their families, wiping out savings accounts. So that’s what it means to be a Christian? Now I get it.

Rail route tour

Concerned about just where this rail route runs and how many people and businesses it will affect, I took the free bus tour offered by StopRail Now.

It was certainly an eye opener! It was just over an hour in length, narrated by Panos, who was happy to answer any and all questions from the riders. I urge all concerned citizens, especially the media and pro rail advocates, to take this ride to be able to make a more informed decision when voting in Nov. It is time very well spent and it is free!

For reservations, you can call the SRN headquarters at 536-4384. The bus tour is usually given on Thursdays at noon and occasionally on Fridays. See for yourself, make up your own mind, and vote in November.
