Mahalo, Ah Quon

What a terrific cover story on the life of Ah Quon McElrath last week. I’ve heard her name many times, mostly as a UH regent, but was unaware of all she accomplished in her life. She has made a positive and lasting contribution to Hawaii’s people, and I for one am grateful.

Smart, stable keiki

I hope all parents, especially young ones, read the feature story “How To Make Your Baby Smarter” by Diane Ako.

One thing the experts she interviewed agreed on, and something I found with my own children, is that the way to raise both smart as well as emotionally stable children is regular interaction with their parents.

And nothing does it better than reading with a child.

It bothers me that almost every time I go out to the market or elsewhere, I see young mothers busy yakking on the phone and ignoring their young child or children.

A superhero dad

I found it interesting that in the same issue MidWeek published “How To Make Your Baby Smarter” Bruce Cameron wrote about learning to read and proper pronunciation with his father, and because of that Mr. Cameron refers to his father as Superman.

Something tells me Mr. Cameron wouldn’t have become a writer, and such a good one, without that influence. All of us who read his columns benefit.

Can Malkin

I read MidWeek and generally enjoy your features and columnists. They represent a broad spectrum of views from Dan Boylan to Patrick Buchanan.

However, I seriously question the rationale for Michelle Malkin’s column.

Week after week she writes venomous columns with nothing really constructive to offer, just rants about what she considers to be heinous behavior on the part of liberals, progressives, Democrats or whatever you call those opposing her agenda (which is never defined other than to mean anything not supported by the groups noted above).

There must be other worthy columnists (on either side of the spectrum) you can publish who contribute to our civic debate in a civil and not hateful manner.

Beware all fanatics

In her letter on Muslims, Margit Von Schafnitzel stated that her Moroccan and Jordanian hosts were strict Muslims who condemned the terrorism being committed under the Islamic flag.

Many Christians become so blinded by their own self-righteousness that they can not see their own evil deeds, committed under the U.S./Christian flags, like illegally forcing entry into a foreign country by acts of terrorism, torturing and murdering innocent and wrongly imprisoned detainees, condemning and insulting people, religion and races based on ignorance, intolerance and bigotry.

Fanatics in both religions believe that they are doing their god’s work with their god’s approval. Get a mirror.
