How nice to have Bob Jones make it a point to approach my family at Le Bistro restaurant in Niu Valley, slap me on the back and compliment me on what a great job I’m doing on the KHON News. Then a week later, how typical of Mr. Jones to show his true colors, writing that “Joe Moore is steadily declining, is a shadow of his onetime popular self, has an agonizingly slow on-air delivery, is not a journalist, just a reader of prepared news scripts, and station owners have to be looking for a new personality for the years ahead.”
Yes, good that you can always depend on some things in life. Mr. Jones could have mentioned that while all station newscast ratings have decreased from the glory years when there were only three stations doing news, with no competition from hundreds of cable channels, the internet or iPhones, KHON remains No. 1, the most watched TV news in Hawaii.
He could have mentioned that I have always chosen a slow, clear delivery when presenting the news in order that viewers have a better chance of understanding the information presented. He could have mentioned that over the years, my role at KHON has increased to include that of senior editor for each of the three nightly newscasts I anchor at 5:30, 6, and 10 p.m., working in conjunction with the talented young producers of those newscasts. As for the station looking for a new newscaster for the years ahead? Strange they would sign me to a new contract through 2017.
But why should Mr. Jones mess up his column with the facts?
Hopefully, the next time he sees someone in public that he plans to attack in print, Mr. Jones will forgo the back-slapping, glad-handing, good-to-see-you routine and just concentrate on his next two-faced, back-stabbing, gutter-sniping column.

Bush league
While Ted Kennedy’s family, relatives, friends and admirers are still mourning his passing, Rick Hamada’s avarice in reliving Mary Jo Kopechne’s demise is simply bush league and crudely disrespectful.
Ted Kennedy accomplished a lot in his lifetime and, like all of us, had his human failings, as did his brothers. Would Mr. Hamada have lambasted John F. Kennedy’s adulterous lifestyle while his assassination was still being mourned by the nation? I think not.
What is truly bush league is Mr. Hamada’s misspelling of the poor girl’s name.

Oh, the irony
Susan Page’s recent rant against Obama and healthcare reform offers a truckload of irony.
Ms. Page may rail on about careless spending and the growing federal deficit, but where was she when the previous president single-handedly transformed the government surplus into debt? For Ms. Page, tax cuts for the rich and a needless war apparently justify federal debt, but health-care reform does not.
And here the irony becomes waist-deep. As Ms. Page frequently espouses Christian values, it is odd that she fails to even mention the 40 million to 50 million Americans who lack any health insurance at all. Insurance premiums as well as medical and drug costs are extremely expensive. Even people with insurance often forgo treatment. But rather than focusing on the shameful fact that a country as wealthy as ours does not guarantee basic medical care for its citizens, Ms. Page focuses on the evils of a big-spending government. I acknowledge that budgets matter, but still - at the end of the day - I have to ask: Ms. Page, where’s the aloha?
