Just a short response to Susan Page’s “How Dare Germans Criticize U.S.” article. Patting ourselves on the back is not the American way, but thank you, Susan, for reminding us that we indeed have much of which to be proud. Germany was our bitter enemy, we gave them the helping hand they needed. But we do not aspire to be like them. We cherish being Americans, unique in all the world.

Lacking leadership
Dan Boylan is apparently becoming aware that, while our “poetic” and “lyrical” president may be a great campaigner, he is not measuring up as an executive. Some of us were not dazzled by the well-delivered campaign platitudes and saw that the feint to the political middle as just good politics. The president, a liberal by education and association, attempts to lead a center-right country. We have seen administrative initiative after initiative that would lead to more government in our lives. But these initiatives have stalled, even with a Democratically controlled Congress. The Chicago pols who engineered the takeover of Congress knew the conservative bent of the electorate and engaged moderate candidates, who are now in Congress stymieing Obama’s moves to more government control. So what is the Obama apologist to do? Why, blame the Republicans, of course! According to Mr. Boylan, the minority Republicans are responsible for the growing administration debacle and are racist to boot. Liberals like to use the race card when all else fails.

Keep it ‘Magic’
Why is Mayor Hannemann proposing to rename our beloved Magic Island to President Barack Obama Beach Park except for purely political reasons? The name Magic Island is, in my opinion, a perfect name for the peninsula from which you can view beautiful beaches, Diamond Head, the Waikiki skyline and green, lush mountains.
To have a President who was born and raised in Hawaii brings pride and recognition for the people of Hawaii. But I remember what Obama said during his visit to Copenhagen in his bid to bring the next Olympics to Chicago. Both Obamas spoke in deeply personal terms about Chicago. Obama described Chicago as a city of diversity and warmth, a place where he finally found acceptance and a home. Hardly the kind of sentiments from a person that we would like to name a beloved park after in Hawaii.

Rename Sandy’s
If we’re going to rename a park for President Obama, why not the generically named Sandy Beach, where he bodysurfed as a boy and during his campaign?

Awesome ‘Eddie’
Thank you to Don Chapman for bringing “The Eddie” to our front door in his column “The High Priests Wore Board Shorts.” We enjoyed his very vivid description of the event. It was as if we were right there on the shore at Waimea Bay, minus trying to find parking and the 20,000 to 30,000 people lined 20-deep on the beach.
We use to take trips out to Waimea when the waves got as high as 20 feet and were mesmerized by all the sight, sound, feel of the ocean spray and smell of the saltwater. Mother Nature’s power was truly awesome in honoring Eddie Aikau this year with her massive waves. The sight, sound, vibration, explosion as the waves break - awesome. Thank you again.
