Proud of Raeceen
It was with great pride I read the MidWeek cover story about Miss Hawaii Raeceen Woolford, the former UH Wahine volleyball star. As I was her fifth-grade teacher, a correction must be made. Rae, as she was known, attended Our Savior Lutheran School in Aiea, not Our Redeemer in Honolulu. As she progressed through the grades, she was of great interest to me for her coordination and skills in games and sports. I took her on my basketball team as a fourth-grader so she could learn more specialized skills, and she helped the fifth- and sixth-grade girls’ team for three years, and also played volleyball and ran track.
We are proud of Raeceen’s accomplishments, as she has grown into a fine Christian young lady. We pray for her best performance yet in Les Vegas.

Makes sense, eh?
Examining the logic of D. Costa’s pro-fireworks letter in last week’s MidWeek:
1) I live in a clean environment.
2) You want to pollute my clean environment.
3) Therefore, I should move to a more polluted environment.

Puzzling points
After reading Bob Jones’ column “Christmas and American Muslims” several times, I’m still not sure what he is trying to say. At first, I thought he was admonishing Muslims for not celebrating Christmas while the rest of the world does. But then he goes on to say that “in the Western cities mentioned above, you’re unlikely to ever see a display commemorating Ramadan.” So obviously he isn’t admonishing us.
It certainly gets even more confusing as he quotes a random Muslim lawyer whose views can only be described as fringe by most Muslims. Then he goes on to describe the commercialization of Eid, and it beginning to resemble Christmas. In fact, since the time of the Prophet Muhammad, Muslims wear new clothes on Eid, prepare good meals and make their homes nice and welcoming.
I do agree that Eid is becoming more commercialized - which holiday doesn’t when greedy corporations try to cash in on everything?
Considering that some people thought Jones was actually supporting the extremists’ views while others like me are just confused, I suggest he write another article clarifying his point.

Laughs with Ron
Each week when MidWeek arrives, the first thing I read is Ron Nagasawa’s column - funny stories of his daily life with his family. Thanks for sharing with us, the readers, the interesting facts of life and experiences that uplift one’s spirit. Please, Ron, continue your sense of humor, because we all need a lot of humor these days.

No gay gene
Regarding the 1/22/10 vote against the will of the people by Hawaii’s senators, both the American Psychological Association and the head of the Human Genome Project have recently affirmed that there is no homosexual gene. So science says that homosexuality is not hard-wired. Therefore, the gay lobby is a special-interest group, and special-interest groups should not receive government subsidy and endorsement against the will of the majority. To those who ignore that and vote against the will of the people, we say: Start looking for a new job.
