Why vote for Tam?

Rod Tam is so lucky to live in Hawaii and be a politician. Now, if he was a politician in China and he was charged with the same charges as here, we all know what his sentence would be. He’d be a target on the firing line. But he is really lucky if he goes to jail here because he would be eating and sleeping off us taxpayers with no bills to pay. No matter what the outcome is, he will be a winner like all the other politicians who rip off the state for their own agendas. But who cares? We keep putting these same clowns back in office over and over. Auwe!

Holier than thou

Susan Page’s holier-than-thou rant against American Olympic champions’so-called “me-itis” was a complete waste of paper and ink. One can only assume she is upset at our Olympians because they competed for a nation led by Barack Obama, who supported the U.S. team, and Ms. Page, like all “good” Republicans, opposes anything the president is for.

More to the point, each of the athletes she castigates for not praising coaches and teammates and parents in the moments after victory overlooks one thing: They compete in individual sports. It was their years of hard work, sacrifice and sweat equity that made gold medals possible, no one else’s. One assumes that in the privacy of calmer moments coaches and parents were indeed thanked, but regardless it is wrong to fault a young athlete for celebrating his or her personal victory in the giddy moments after it was achieved.

I wonder how Ms. Page reacted after being crowned Miss Texas: “Thank you, Mom and Dad and everyone from my home town, and especially all my teachers!” I somehow doubt it.

Therapy needed

It’s clear after reading her column criticizing U.S. Olympians that Susan Page needs to sign up for therapy - for her grumpiness addiction.

Allow gay Scouts

Regarding Bob Jones’ comments about Boys Scouts, God and gays:

I have been a Freemason for almost 50 years. A few years ago Dan Brown attacked Freemasonry via President George Washington and many of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, who were Freemasons, of trying to conquer the world via their secret Illuminati. It is true they were trying to conquer the world via our philosophy of freedom of religion. He finally apologized, expressing deepest respect for Scottish-Rite Freemasonry. Times change, and recently in Hawaii we now offer Muslims the opportunity to take their final vows with the Koran on our altar.

I have been associated with the Boy Scouts for more than 60 years. In like manner, in reference to Mr. Jones’ excellent article, I believe we should include atheists, agnostics and gays by removing our 1991 exclusion from Scouting, by inserting in our oath the words, “with due respect to others who prefer to remain silent when certain words are spoken that affect their beliefs.” Inserting their beliefs might well disturb the harmony of the vast majority. This permits freedom of ideology.

Re-aim bank cams

MidWeek‘s efforts to nab criminals are much appreciated, but it would also be appreciated if business owners - especially banks - used some common sense!

As an example, banks should be aiming their teller cameras up to the customer, not down, since most people will be looking up at the criminal.

Secondly, banks should post a sign as well as have their security guards tell patrons wearing hats, sunglasses, masks, veils, scarfs and other articles of clothing that conceal their face that service is restricted to ATM, which will substantially reduce bank robberies and the amounts lost.
