As a Hawaii resident currently working abroad, I try my very best to keep up with the comings and goings in the state.
I congratulate all of the women who are showcased in the MidWeek cover story “Women Who Makes Us Say Wow,” as well as yourselves for bringing a very positive story about women who are making a difference in a significant way.
The world of entertainment, modeling and reality shows I’m sure have their place in our society, but I feel that too much emphasis is placed in those areas and not enough attention is focused on real accomplishment for individuals as well as people in far and diverse surroundings.
Mahalo for publishing such a positive story.

Doing with less
Thank you to editor Don Chapman for his recent column “So Which Services Don’t You Want?”
I am a state employee, a nurse with Pubic Health Nursing. We have just completed our annual project of giving flu vaccines to schoolchildren - a big project in addition to the other mandated services we provide to the public. We are all trying to cope with decreases in workers and furlough days, trying to keep up with daily work demands. It is a difficult task, and I don’t think the public is aware of the impact on the vulnerable population we serve.
I just wanted you to know Mr. Chapman’s perspective is appreciated.

Real change
What’s going on here? Pat Buchanan is a conservative with whom I’ve disagreed for years. Suddenly - over the past few months actually - I’m starting to agree with him on a variety of issues, including his asking why we still have U.S. troops in Korea and last week’s warning of the fiscal woes heading our way if we don’t heed what’s happening in Europe.
One of us has changed, and I don’t think it’s me.
Anyway, thank you for presenting columns and stories that make me think.

The red shirts
In last week’s MidWeek, Arianna Huffington told us that we are “at a real turning point in the struggle for equality” with “The Inevitability of Civil Unions.” Maybe someone should tell that to the Catholic Church. Their unfortunate red-shirted display of intolerance brought shame to all of Hawaii. We are the land of aloha, and all their screaming and sign-waving will never change that. The last election proved that it is going to happen.
Perhaps the Catholic Church should worry more about its pedophile priests who sexually molest innocent little boys, and not about two people who love each other and want to share their lives together here in Hawaii. The Catholic Church has already paid out billions of dollars to its sex-abuse victims with no end in sight. Think how much good that money could have done for the poor and homeless. They might also want to wear their red shirts outside their revered Vatican Bank (official name: The Institute for the Works of Religion), which is under investigation by Italian authorities for money laundering, financial fraud and tax evasion.
One can only wonder how many tourists and tourist dollars were lost due to their actions. That type of behavior does not belong in Hawaii, and let’s all hope that we never see any of that again.

Taste of history
Thank you to Susan Sunderland for her story on lunch wagons. I hadn’t realized the historical connection - food trucks taking lunch to plantation workers in the fields. Knowing that, it makes these places all the more special. This truly is a Hawaii sensation. I’d love to see the Hawaii Five-0) crew eating at a lunch wagon in one episode.

Bob’s Zumba
I’m a Bob Hogue fan, and just wish you could have gotten a photograph of Bob doing the Zumba class. The three young ladies in the picture with his column are cute, but something tells me seeing Bob would have been pretty amusing.
