Readers respond
Jade Moon’s Dec. 1 column “The Need For Blood Takes No Holiday” was wonderful. The Blood Bank of Hawaii has had such great response with many positive comments from blood donors who were inspired to come in and donate after reading Jade’s story profiling the blood recipient.
We truly appreciate MidWeek helping Blood Bank of Hawaii get the word out with such a poignant story, while providing community service.

Carpetbaggers
In response to Bob Jones’ column “What To Do About Carpetbaggers?” - I must say that I would never vote for a candidate who is not truly my neighbor, in the sense that we live in the same community.
In the three examples Mr. Jones cited, I hope voters were previously unaware of their carpetbagging representatives. I can’t imagine voting for someone who as an outsider could not possibly know what the needs and issues are.
But then I can’t imagine why people kept voting for Rod Tam, unless he took them to lunch - a lot.
It should be the law that to run for an office, you must have been a resident there for at least one year.

Obama tribute?
I notice nobody is talking much these days about building a tribute to Barack Obama in our fair city. I was no fan of George W. Bush, and voted for Obama. He has lost me. I never thought I’d ever see the two worst presidents in our history back-to-back.

Feeling sleepy
Ariana Huffington’s column “Sleep Is The True Ticket To Wisdom” was a real wake-up call, so to speak. I had no idea about all of the health risks associated with lack of sleep. I’m one of those young moms with a job, and I try to be “macho” about not getting enough sleep. For the sake of my family, and my own health, I will be working at getting more rest.

Gay brigade
Regarding equal rights for gays in the military: The U.S. military can form a Rainbow Combat team like the patriotic Japanese 442nd combat team in WWII. Let’s see how they perform in the military, then decide one way or the other. Foreign militaries have no problem with gays, they are just as patriotic and they pay the same taxes.
