Wow, what a great article by Rasa Fournier, “Five-0 Fashions.” I’m old enough to remember - kind of - the original with Jack Lord, but I just love the new version and its stars. It was fascinating to learn how much work goes into each character’s “look” and how that helps reveal character. I’ll be paying attention to what people are wearing in future episodes - not to mention reruns.

In response to Georgia Lee’s letter “Obama tribute?”- I beg to differ. Like Ms. Lee, I voted for Obama, who for two years has been in a state of fix - attributable to George W. Bush. A tribute built to Obama in our city, on another note, absolutely!

Heard it all now
Now I’ve heard it all, thanks to Larry Price’s column “Unemployment Benefits For Losers.” At first I didn’t realize Mr. Price was referring to politicians who lost and were voted out of office, “loser” being such a common word these days. When I realized it was about politics, I thought, this is nuts!
The possibility of losing is a basic part of running for office, and if the people don’t think you have been serving their interests, and the community’s, you should be gone. And why should we taxpayers continue to pay them after that?
Besides, I’d expect most of them have jobs lined up with big-money guys they were serving.

Polar opposites
While I appreciate Chester Lau’s apparent acceptance of gays in society, he could not be more wrong in comparing the 442/100 Japanese soldiers of World War II with a possible “Rainbow Combat Team” of gay and lesbian soldiers to “see how they perform.”
The fact is that gays have always served in our military, and with honor. Those outed in recent years including a highly decorated Air Force “ace” with many hours of combat flights, combat veterans, intelligence officers and multiple Arabic translators, who we need more than ever.
Ending “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” gives patriotic gays (like me) and lesbians an opportunity to serve their country.
As for those who fear that gay soldiers will be “hitting on” their straight brethren, come on. There is enough history of male-on-female aggression within the troops - anybody remember the Navy’s “Tailhook” debacle or multiple incidents at the Air Force Academy? - to make that argument beside-the-point.
