Resolution No. 1: Lose those darned 10 pounds that have somehow remained elusive for an entire decade now.

Resolution No. 2: Clean out drawers, cupboards and closets that have become, sadly, nothing more than receptacles for various odds and ends and of course, plenty of dust.

There. Done. Another year, another set of resolutions. But in surveying my list for 2006, you may think I’ve set the bar pretty low. You would be right about that. It’s because I am a little older and a lot wiser now. I realize I have wasted time feeling guilty about all the promises broken or stashed away in some dark recess in the memory part of my brain. You know - out of sight, out of mind. My New Year’s goals used to be lofty, save-the-world stuff. And, really, it’s not that I’ve given up on them. I still believe in world peace and making a difference in the community. But I’m looking around and the clutter is clamoring - notice me! Clean me! Don’t ignore me anymore!

Maybe I started realizing all this a few days ago. I wanted to bake a round of Brie and pulled out a box of puff pastry sheets from the nether regions of my freezer. I looked at the expiration date - June of 2002. Yikes, what else was in there? I was afraid to dig around and find out.

That same evening I went to the little cupboard in the kitchen where we toss medicines, matches, whatever. I needed something for my son. After rooting around for a couple of minutes I found what I was looking for - cough syrup. From 2001.

I also found rolls of film for cameras I no longer use, two first aid kits, one Baggie filled with very old boxes of Band Aids, and two baby geckoes. Also crayons, a pencil sharpener, a broken VHS recorder, a bright green elastic sling - you get the picture. And it is not a pretty one.

So this year, I am focusing on small things. Things I’ve neglected for years, but now they’re screaming to be done. Clutter is my enemy, and my plan is to attack and eliminate it.

And, oh yeah, I am going to lose those 10 pounds. This year, for sure.
