Destiny may have had a lot to do with Robert and Roland Cazimero’s legendary status in Hawaiian music, as they were born to professional musicians. However, it’s their exquisite talent, professionalism, dedication and passion for Hawaiian music that have allowed these brothers to continue to give their fans musical excellence.
Destiny, their 37th album including collaborative and solo releases, is another magical collection that many say is their best yet.
“Several things set this album apart,” says Robert. “First, the extreme maturity that Roland and I bring to this project - a healthy amount of talent and living life. Participating in head-trips and games is something we don’t need to live anymore. What the listener then hears is honesty, simple truths and our talent.”
The duo, who have sold more than 1 million albums throughout their career, recently received the 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts.
Coming up for Robert and Roland is a performance at the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards June 17.
You also can catch the brothers at Chai’s Island Bistro every Wednesday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
“It’s a great gig for Robert and me,” says Roland. “We just have good fun playing together on Wednesdays.”
Outside of their many concerts, the guys also have a few more honors to add to their ever-growing list. They’ve been asked to be honorary chairs for the Boys & Girls Club Gala Fundraiser in August. And Alu Like is also honoring Robert and Roland at its gala honoring “the pillars of our culture.”
To help top off the year, join the Brothers Cazimero for their Christmas concert at Hawaii Theatre, scheduled for Dec. 12, 13 and 14.
Your recently released album is titled Destiny.
Do you both really feel that this amazing musical path you’ve taken is destiny?
Robert: Years ago, we believed that we chose our career, never realizing that it was the opposite - our career chose us. Is this our destiny? Absolutely.
Roland: Yes, it is our Destiny; next one is Legacy!
When creating the album and selecting the songs, what were the intentions for the feel and sound?
Robert: Always paramount for a Brothers Caz recording is our being comfortable in what we do. It is always important for me to know that Roland is a part of the project, and that courtesy is extended from Roland to me as well.
Roland: That the sound would be just as good or better than the other albums we’ve recorded and would make people want to move, to dance.
Do any of the songs have special sentimental significance?
Robert: One song, I Kua, that Manu Boyd and I wrote, is for our hula sister Suzanne Kaupu Soon and celebrates the birth of her first son.
Roland: Paumalu. Every time I hear that song I think about Robert and Na Kamalei winning Merrie Monarch with that chant - chicken skin.
What was it like receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Honolulu Academy of Recording Arts?
Robert: I don’t know about anybody else but, for me personally, when you get a Lifetime Achievement Award and to receive it while we are still here on earth is a real high. It was humbling being in the company of Jimmy Borges, Jerry Santos and the other recipients.
Roland: It feels great, and we’re alive to accept it. And knowing who else has gotten one is humbling.
Besides music, what else has been taking up your time recently?
Robert: For me, redecorating my condo. I’ve recently joined the Honolulu Club and am working through sore muscles. I’ve also been working on the Robert Cazimero songbook.
Roland: Writing new music and hanging out with Kim Taylor Reece.

Is there anything else that you still want to accomplish?
Robert: There are many things I would still like to accomplish. I want to record more albums, play in more cities with my brother around the world. I want to take Na Kamalei to places that most people dream about and never really see. And I would kill to do one more show with Bette Midler.
Roland: Yes, yes, yes. Some of this and some of that - mostly music-related. I’d love to see my Music for Pele turned into a Broadway show.
