Some of my best college memories transpired on the grassy lawn of the Waikiki Shell enjoying the always awesome Birthday Bash.
By the second year, we had the system down. A couple people were designated to stand in line early with enough blankets to save a sizable spot on the lawn when the gates opened. A small sacrifice, considering that group would be exempt from having to carry in the to-be-inspected coolers - a result of a new and strictly enforced no-outside-alcohol policy. Let’s just say there were a lot of close calls.
Along with the coolers came lots of food and lots of energy amped up by some of the best local music. The musicians always delivered their hottest hits with all-out energy. Nothing like listening to great live music with good friends under a star-lit sky.
This year’s concert, happening July 24 and 25, marks its 20th year. What originated as the Jawaiian Jam, a monthly concert series at Aloha Tower, has evolved into an annual sold-out event presented by KCCN FM 100.
To commemorate its anniversary, some of Hawaii’s finest musicians came together to form the Jawaiian Jam All Star Band. Group members include original Jawaiian Jam alumni Bruddah Waltah, Kelly Boy De Lima (Kapena), Hoku Tolentino (Ho’aikane), Sean Na’auao and Danny Kennedy (The Mana’o Company) and Luisa Finau (Na Wai Ho’olu’u o Ke Anuenue).
“As a tribute to our beginning, we’ve assembled the finest musicians to perform a power set of hits from the early days of KCCN FM100,” says Davey D (David Daniels), KCCN program director, on-air personality and host of Overdrive Live on OC-16. “I think fans will be blown away with the Jawaiian Jam All Stars. They’ve already begun planning, meeting and rehearsing, and they’re cherry-picking their biggest hits to create a massive medley.”
Both nights at this year’s FM100 Birthday Bash will feature performances of the Jawaiian Jam All Stars. The lineup for Friday also features Kapena, Katchafire, Natural Vibrations, Rebel Souljahz, Kawao, Maoli, Ho’okoa, and the “Battle to the Bash” winner.
Saturday’s lineup features Fiji, The Mana’o Company, Na Wai, Ten Feet, J Boog, Koa’uka, Ilona Irvine and City Side.
“Planning for Birthday Bash usually starts in January,” says Daniels. “We take a look at who’s hot on the radio, who’s generating a lot of buzz with our listeners and who we know will rock the crowd at Birthday Bash. This year we also put up a poll on our station’s website and asked our listeners who they’d like to see.”

Emceeing the weekend event will be KCCN FM radio personalities Lina Girl, Pipi, Shannon Scott, Davey D, Bryan Min, Spike on the Mic, Hype, J Irie and Aaron Mikami.
The show starts at 5:30 p.m. both nights. Lawn seats cost $25 for each show and terrace seats $27. Discounted tickets for both nights are $36 for lawn and $38 for terrace. “We credit all of the fans in attendance because without the fans’ support, we just couldn’t sustain any level of success,” says Daniels. “That’s why we’ve upped our game every year - utilizing the latest technology such as LED screen, projectors, lights, sound - so that the fans walk away with a positive experience” ...
Otherwise: The Love Festival returns for its 11th annual Summer Island Massive, Hawaii’s largest dance music festival.
Taking the reins at the music wheel are John O’Callaghan, DJ Dan, DJ Reza, Kid Krazzy, DJ Heather, G-Spot and more. It all happens this week Saturday from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. on four massive stages at Wet ‘n’Wild Hawaii.
Ireland’s Best Producer and Best DJ at Irish Dance Music Awards’ John O’Callaghan headlines Area One with his unique blend of trance. Joining him is Los Angeles’ own DJ Dan and everyone’s favorite party rocker and Saturday Night Sessions’ own DJ Reza. The multi-dimensional Kid Krazzy and Hawaii’s own G-Spot rounds out Area One’s stage.
Chicago’s DJ Heather will transform Area Two with sheer bedlam and bliss along with Lenny Vega, Greyboy and a host of others bringing the house and electronic funk.
Area Three features hiphop and urban beats by DJ Tetris, Rick Rock, Lava and other masters of blazing beats.
Honolulu’s KTUH 90.3FM loads up Area Four with its own jocks and mixers for some pure Island fun.
