For the past 11 years, the Hawaii Music Awards, which aim to recognize Hawaii’s best musicians, has honored mainstay local talent and has introduced new names to the industry as well.

Recognized as the people’s choice awards for Hawaii’s music, HMA continues its efforts to perpetuate local music. This year’s nominees once again illustrate the talents of Hawaii artists offered in just about every genre.

“This year we have the usual popular people like Daniel Ho, Keali’i Reichel and Danny Couch,” says Johnny Kai, executive director of the Hawaii Music Awards. “But the wonderful thing, because of our system, is we get to see the new people like spoken-word artist Katana, and that’s one of the great things about the Hawaii Music Awards.”

The voting period has begun, and the public has until Feb. 7 to support their favorite musicians. Voting is easy - log on to www.hawaiimusicawards.com and click on Vote Now. And the rules are simple: only one vote per e-mail address.

“Before we allowed everyone to vote every day,“explains Kai. “We used that method to maximize the exposure to the artists, but some of the nominees felt it was harder because they had to vote every day. So now there’s more control.”

The winners will receive their awards at the winners banquet April 4 at Mamiya Theatre. Tickets cost $30 and $45. and include a buffet dinner.

“At the Mamiya Theatre we are able to drop the cost for tickets and the cost of food because we are bringing in a caterer,” says Kai. “We’re trying to address the economy and make it more affordable for the musicians to bring their families.”
