Del.icio.usAfter spending the past four months on KCCN’s Top 5 at 5, the guys of Kawao decided it’s time to celebrate the release of their recent album, The Secret’s Out, with a much overdue CD Release Party this weekend. It’s a highly anticipated party that celebrates the success the group has welcomed since its CD released in October.
“Making the album is never a guarantee that it’s going to be a success, so our plan was to put as much effort into making the album as we could and let the people speak,” says Walt G.“A lot of people like to do it when it comes out, but it was a strategy for us to celebrate with everybody and not just for us.”
The CD release party is happening Saturday, Feb. 3, at Don Ho’s and tickets for the 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. concert featuring Hot Rain, Inoa’ole, B.E.T. and Kawao are still on sale. For tickets, call 358-0540.Kawao is confident that the evening will be filled with what Uncle Joe describes as “feel-good, wonderful, happy music.”
Kalani adds,“We bring the energy to the crowd and we have our own style.”
That energy translates directly to record sales, radio play and an increasing request for gigs. It’s a huge leap for the group, who admit that their “first album didn’t do so well.”
“We had good music, but the thing was that we (Walt G and China) hired musicians that weren’t established to help us out,” says Walt G. “When people come to see us they are like ‘Hey, you’re better than the album.’ So the album did us no justice and doesn’t speak for what we are now.”
It’s been a three-year struggle for Walt G and China, who tested the bumps of a competitive music industry and who two years ago found bandmates that they consider “solid.”
“So now the six of us we put together an album that is really us, because One of Those Days isn’t us,“adds Walt G.“So our album title, The Secret’s Out , means that now everyone is going to know that the secret is out and this is Kawao.”

What do you think makes you unique?
Walt G: My voice, because it’s weird. It’s not good and it’s not bad. I just have a weird pitched voice.
Uncle D: The stomach.
What’s the most memorable moment in your life?
Walt G: I actually have four. The day my wife said she would marry me and then the birth of each of my kids.

Kalani: Almost drowning and getting wiped out at Pipeline surfing. After that I stopped surfing. Traumatized.
What’s your favorite holiday?
Kalani: Christmas.
Uncle D: New Year’s because I get to pop my brother guys’ fireworks.
What do you think about global warming?
Ce3Jay: I think it’s true - somewhat.
Uncle Joe: Well, in Hawaii it’s coming really cold now, and in California it’s getting very, very much colder. And so if it’s getting colder and colder, and hotter and hotter in places that it’s supposed to be cold - I think that’s global warming. You gotta figure if there’s a rip in the ozone layer you can’t just go over there and sew it up.
When did you find out that there was no Santa Claus?
Walt G: There’s no Santa Claus? I still think there is. I have kids so that means that I believe that there’s a Santa Claus.
How do you know when you’re in love?
China: When all I can think about is the person. Walt G: When it’s just one of those days when you’re the only thing that’s on my mind and it’s so hard to breathe without you. (laughs) That’s the lyrics from one of our songs.
That’s why I wrote it because sometimes I can’t shake my wife and she’s always in my head.
What’s your favorite non-alcoholic drink?
Ce3Jay: Water.
Uncle D: That’s automatic - Diet Pepsi.
What do you think is your best physical feature? China: I no more one, it’s like the whole package. Nah (laughs).
Uncle Joe: The color of my eyes because they change color.
What’s your idea of the perfect date?
Walt G: I haven’t been on a date with just me and my wife for a long time. So a perfect date for me is when my kids are able to behave wherever we’re at, and not crying, and being quiet and eating.
Uncle D: Maybe if she pay for the hotel and the car - that’s perfect.
China: I simple, actually. Dinner and a movie is good for me.
Ce3Jay: Everything going smooth, no arguments and good communication going on.
How do you let off steam? Kalani: Take it out on my cat. (laughs) No, I just kidding. Just playing music and playing with the guys. Uncle D: Take a walk. Ce3Jay: I pick up my guitar and start playing.
