Island girl Tiffany Thurston has added another accomplishment to her musical resume with her first solo album, L.I.F.E., which released this week.
With music experience ranging from Kamehameha Schools Concert Glee to compilation albums with New Hope Christian Fellowship to touring with talents such as Natalie Grant, Thurston’s album embodies the elements of her L.I.F.E.,an acronym for Love Inspire Forgive and Eternity.
“All the songs represent one of those four themes and sometimes more than one,” says the 27-year-old Kailua girl.“So they all kind of just tie into those four things, as well represent my life in general. It’s a personal project, and I really wanted to put something out that really expressed my journey, as well as what God has done in my life. I believe that God is a big part of where I am today.”
As a resident of Nashville since September, Thurston’s musical journey has taken her far beyond the shores of her Hawaii home. For the past three months she’s been on the road touring with the REVOLVE Tour and Natalie Grant Show in states such as California, Ohio, Tennessee, New York, Iowa, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Minnesota, Oregon, North Carolina, and of course, Hawaii.
“I love touring, and I feel like I was made for it,“says Thurston, who is an ethnic mix of Hawaiian, Portuguese, Chinese, English, Irish, German, Tahitian and French.“I can see how everything I’ve learned and done through my whole life has led up to this point. I’ve always loved to travel. With touring, it ties in everything that I love, being able to see all these new places, sing, as well as meet a lot of great people.”
Besides her busy touring schedule, Thurston plans to squeeze in some quality time for her fans in Hawaii while she visits her family during the Christmas season. She has appearances scheduled through the end of December and the beginning of January, including Jan. 12 as part of the Breathe concert at the Hawaii Theatre.

What is your fondest musical memory?
There are so many, but I can name two. Getting to sing with Natalie Grant - she is probably my first influential role model in Christian music. She is an amazing talent, so singing with her is kind of a dream come true. I had seen her perform about eight years ago at Hawaii Theatre, and I remember hearing her at 19 years old and remember thinking if she can sing like that and sing for God, that is what I want to do. It’s a real inspiration and it’s great to see how it has come full circle. No. 2 would be that I get to actually lead worship on this Revolve Tour.
Basically worship is a congregational singing, and on the Revolve Tour there are about 10,000 girls who come per venue. If you can only imagine what 10,000 teenage girls feels like standing in the center of the arena, singing a cappella for something bigger than themselves - it is one of the most amazing experiences and one of the most hopeful things that you could ever feel. To get to experience that firsthand is spectacular.
How did you choose the genre and direction for your album, L.I.F.E. ?
As for choosing, I think for this album the genre really chose itself. In writing a lot of these songs, I didn’t expect them to make the album. It was just songs that I would write and play them for people. When I found out that they thought we should put the songs on the album it was kind of a natural progression from there. I think naturally my influences are John Mayer,Indie Irie,Stevie Wonder, Joss Stone. This album has been filtered through those styles because those are the people whom I love listening to. It’s got a little bit of soul, a hint of pop and some jazz and blues as well. It’s just something that I just naturally like.
Besides music, what else in life are you passionate about?
I think now that I’ve been working with youth, I’m thinking about how I can give back. I’m only 27, but I already feel I should be giving back. There’s so much work to be done and, in fact,I just got involved with a group called World Vision - it’s all about helping the kids all around the world who are in need.
Visiting other countries that have much less than America makes me realize how easy we have it here, yet sometimes we, including myself, forget. There are millions around the world who are in need, and even though we may think we don’t have much, we can actually make a world of difference in other countries.
So I’m definitely looking for those opportunities to give back and bring awareness.
Is there a song that brings you back to your childhood days?
This is a very random thought, but I gotta say that song Never Going Give You Up by Rick Astley. It totally brings me back to the ‘80s. It’s pretty cool how songs can do that to you, but it totally takes me back in time.
