Na Kama’s Brian Mersberg, Danny Naipo and Eric Lee are still pinching themselves after a Na Hoku Hanohano win for their third album, Kamakolu, last year.
Honored with the Hawaiian Language Performance award, the guys now feel the pressure to keep the bar high and their music of excellent quality.
“We grow, evolve and find new ideas, and we try to step it up another level,” says Lee. “We like to keep it fresh and show growth.”
Which is the reason the guys decided to put off recording their fourth album, Ho’okopono. As Lee explains, the group was set on releasing an album by the end of this year, but after recording about half the album they realized they needed more time.
So they put those efforts on hold to record what would become their recently released Christmas album, E Ola Ke Ali’i.
“Over the years we’ve been putting out Christmas singles, and we also recorded some Christmas instrumentals for our website, so we had half the album done already,” says Lee. “So we finished the Christmas CD and everything fell into place. The songs came out great and everyone is really excited and happy about it. And it also gave us an opportunity because Danny always wanted to release a Christian album sometime in his career, and I wanted to do the same. So it was an opportunity to run a Christmas CD and also in some way a Christian album too.”

The album features 10 tracks, three of which were individually hand-picked by each of the guys. Naipo chose White Christmas, Mersberg chose Iesu No Ke Kahuhipa and Lee chose a song he wrote called Glory To The King.
This year also marks the group’s 10th anniversary, which they say fits perfectly with the title of their upcoming album, Ho’okopono, which means to endure or see through.
The group anticipates an April 2009 release and is excited about getting back into the studio to finish it up.
In the meantime, they also plan to continue to share their music with the world and keep their listeners happy.
“To us, it’s all about the crowd,” adds Lee. “We are just the host of the party and the crowd is the party. We want the crowd to enjoy their time and make them happy.”
