Nesian NINE, Pinoy Power And Kimie

It will be one big family affair at Don Ho’s this Saturday as Nesian Nine, a close-knit band of nine family members from Oahu, celebrates its first ever Nesian NINE Fest. Also joining the band is Trey Smoov, their cousins from Carson, Calif.
Presented by Riddim House Entertainment, Nesian NINE Fest also welcomes Ray Leger from Utah, Local culture from Long Beach, and Hawaii’s Kaipo Kapua, Rep uu Roots and twenty20.
“We decided to have this event because we wanted to produce a platform that will showcase Polynesian bands from different areas,” says stili Malepeai, Nesian NINE manager. “And Hawaii is the motherland to enable everyone to see island talent.”
Nesian NINE will cap off the show with a performance showcasing its signature harmonies and everything from R&B to reggae to soul to old school. Group members are James “Ziggy” Maika, Lauititi “Lt” togafau, Jeremy “Kainoa” salave’a, Billy Faoa, eddie “eddie Licks” Lafaele Jr., “styXx” Lafaele, travis “Buja” alcos, Rick Lepule and amako “Mad Max” Malepeai.
Since the release of its debut album Press Play in October 2009, Nesian NINE has been an in-demand force in the local music scene. And with its huge fan base abroad, the group has spent a lot of time touring.
Between gigs, Nesian NINE also has been in and out of the studio working on its sophomore album scheduled to release later this year.

Congratulations to Pinoy Power team Radio (101.5 FM) as it celebrates its sixth anniversary this month.
“Pinoy Power, I believe, is the first Filipino FM station here in Hawaii and, if I’m not mistaken, in North America,” says israel Pacis savellano, DJ and broadcaster.
Founded and produced by emmy ortega anderson, Pinoy Power’s mission is to enrich, enlighten, educate, entertain and empower kababayans.

Also happening this weekend is the Wahiawa Pineapple Festival, which celebrates Wahiawa’s rich cultural heritage with food, activities and music! And, for the first time, this year’s event has expanded into a two-day affair. The fun begins Saturday at 9 a.m. with a parade on California Avenue. The festival will commence at 10 a.m. at Wahiawa District Park with cultural exhibits, ethnic foods, games, bouncers, crafts, entertainment provided by students, American Indian dancers and more.

Next week Friday (May 20) is a big night for Kimie (Kauikeolani Miner) as she celebrates the debut of her music video Is This Love? at RumFire. All eyes will be on the 25-year-old singer/songwriter at this music video premiere party, which begins at 8 p.m.
The music video is directed by Image Creations, produced by Matthew Honda and slapp symphony, and mastered by tatsuya sato in New York.
“We filmed it on the North Shore and Ewa Beach, and I wanted to make sure it represented me as an artist,” says Kimie, a Kamehameha School grad. “And it does, because it represents the lyrics that I wrote, and it’s simple - my music is simple and the way that I am is more simple.”
Rounding out the music video crew are local fashion designer and stylist Matthew Bruening, makeup artist Maile Meno, hair-stylist colin edsman and model austin Kino from Niche Models and Talent.
“It will be unlike anything Hawaii has ever seen as far as the quality of the video,” says Kimie, who was born on Oahu and raised on Oahu and in Kona.
The song Is This Love? will be on her EP, which is scheduled to release this summer.
“Crazy was one of the first songs that I recorded, and this song, Is This Love?, is kind of a continuation of that song as far as the different stages that you go through in a relationship,” says Kimie, who describes her music as acoustic soul reggae. “It’s that stage when you’re both so comfortable and you’re asking yourself, is this still love?”
Is This Love? also will be featured on the upcoming compilation album Nocturnal Sound Krew & Slapp Symphony presents Drown ‘em in Beats; Save ‘em with Rhymes.
Kimie currently resides in Kona, but traveling for leisure and music are passions that she says can be heard in her songs as well.
“I really enjoy what I do, and I just want to keep growing and keep spreading my music,” adds Kimie. “To be able to do music and travel, which are my two favorite things ever, is so fun.”
