Star-studded Oceanside Concerts

Musicians and marine life take center stage at this year’s 2010 Ke Kani O Ke Kai Summer Concert Series hosted by Waikiki Aquarium.
The star-studded series - in the sky, on stage and in the exhibits - features five oceanside concerts every other Thursday starting tomorrow through Aug. 12. Alongside the attractions, some of the island’s best restaurants will be on site to serve up their popular fare.
And here’s the lineup: June 17, HAPA with food by Kahai Street Kitchen; July 1, Makana with food by Rainbow Drive-In; July 15, Willie K with food by Yama’s Fish Market; July 29, Amy Hanaiali’i with food by Big City Diner; and Aug. 12, Ho’okena with food by Hula Grill Waikiki.
“We usually spotlight established stars,” says director Andrew Rossiter.
“Generally it’s Hawaiian music. We have tried other formulas and, while successful, it didn’t have the degree of popularity that the Hawaiian music has.”

The concert series, which began in 1995, has continued to grow in popularity. And for the past two years every concert in the series has sold out.
“It’s become a signature event on the Waikiki calendar,” adds Rossiter. “From my point of view, this series is a great way of welcoming people to the aquarium who might not otherwise come here. And it’s also a great service to the community because it’s a wonderful venue and they can get really close and personal with some of the celebrated artists on the island.”
Special series pricing, including single admission to all five concerts, is available for $120 general, $40 for children ages 7 to 12. Individual concert tickets cost $30 for adults and $10 for children ages 7 to 12. Discounts are available for Friends of the Waikiki Aquarium members. Aquarium doors open at 5:30 p.m., with the concert beginning at 7. The galleries and exhibits remain open throughout the evening, and fans may bring personal low-lying beach chairs.
This year’s proceeds will support the first phase of a photovoltaic installation at the Waikiki Aquarium as part of its environmentally responsible mission and to reduce electricity costs.
“Usually the proceeds from the series go toward an exhibit in the aquarium, but this year we’re allocating all the proceeds to a photovoltaic solar system because we’re trying to move the aquarium along green lines,” says Rossiter.

There’s still time to sign up for the second annual MELE Songwriters Workshop happening next week Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Honolulu Community College.
Designed to be useful to songwriters of all levels, the workshop features three days of intensive interaction with top-level national and local music business professionals.
Among this year’s professionals are Carrie Underwood‘s multi-platimnum producer Mark Bright; Hall of Fame songwriter Bob DiPiero; and Kyle Jacobs, writer of Garth Brooks’ More Than A Memory. And music legend Robert Cazimero will deliver the keynote address.
The workshop’s goals are to kick-start creativity and create a better understanding of the music business.
The MELE program at HCC, which began in 2007, exists to help foster songwriting creativity in Hawaii and create opportunities for Hawaii’s music in the global marketplace. Since its first class, more than 500 students have registered for courses.
