Even a hurricane warning couldn’t keep 4,000 people from The Love Festival last year.
Knock on wood, but this year will top that number not just if weather permits, but because there’s an over-the-top roster with some of the world’s hottest names in music, some making their very first appearance in Hawaii.
Names such as DJ Icey, Micro, Junior Sanchez, Taylor, DJ Reza, Paul Anthony, G-Spot and more than 20 other DJs will be working to make it the biggest and best Love Festival dance party since it got its start here in Hawaii 10 years ago.
“DJ Icey has never been here before, and a lot of people are excited about him,” says G Dehnert, co-promoter of the festival. “I’ve been trying to get him for the past five or six years, but he’s always turned down Hawaii, just because he’s too busy. Junior Sanchez also is really famous out of New York, and he’s worked with a lot of the well-known artists. But a lot of the younger people are excited for Micro. They are really big in the electronic dance music and he’s never been here.”
Happening at Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park next week Saturday (July 19), there will be three stages of music playing everything from electronic dance to hip-hop to ‘80s jams. There’s a light show, some people dress in costumes and it is basically an expect-the-unexpected kind of event.

“It’s really festive and a lot of people have been going for the past 10 years,” says Dehnert. “It has a lot of excitement and positive energy bouncing around. For some people, this is their favorite party of the year. You just kinda got to go with an open mind.”
Pegged as America’s longest-running dance music tour since getting its start in Los Angeles 16 years ago, the festival has since traveled to places such as San Diego, Mexico and, of course, Hawaii. Hawaii’s festival got its legs 10 years ago when Dehnert and his friend Reza, who was DJing at the Los Angeles festival, gathered some talent at a warehouse off Sand Island Access Rd. In the works for Dehnert and co-promoter Reza is a Love Festival in Brazil next year.
“It’s a very diverse and progressive type of party,“adds Dehnert.“I do a lot of events all year long - some are weekly, some are monthly. For people who go to all my shows, this is the party they love the most. What separates it is the production. It’s done very well. Everything from the go-go dancer outfits, to the outdoor atmosphere, to the lighting.”

The Love Festival is open from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. and welcomes everyone 18 and over. There’s full bar service for those 21 and over, food and drink concessions and free giveaways. “This is the 10th year and this is the best lineup ever,” says Dehnert. “We bring in who we feel is hot and who’s never been here, who we think people would like to hear, and also people who we think people should hear. We try to balance it on what they want is what we can educate them with.”
