The Throwdowns Go National

The Throwdowns (Erin Smith, Ian Hollingsworth, Ola Shaw and Kimo Clark) are amped up for the national launch of their remastered debut album Don’t Slow Down - so much that they’re inviting everyone to come down to Pipeline April 30 for their All-Ages CD Celebration Concert.
“It’s a celebration of Don’t Slow Down, but we’ll be playing six new songs and we’ve got lots of special guests,” says Smith, lead vocalist. “It’s going to be so fun.”
The album, re-released by ADA/Warner Music Group, features seven original songs, Redemption On The Dance Floor, Stolen Car, Kihei Town, All The Answers, Ekomomai, Take A Swing and Gettin Bored.
But before the big day, the group is making a stop at Clear Channel’s Roadrunner Music Hall April 29 where Star 101.9 will give away tickets to 50 lucky fans. The concert will stream live on the Web, so you can watch from home, office or phone!
It’s been a busy year for the Maui-based band, as it’s opened for bands such as The Fray, Panic at the Disco and Matisyahu.
Opening for The Throwdowns at its CD celebration are The Jump Offs, The Deadbeats and more surprise artists. The group also will debut its music video Stolen Car.

“We have a wonderful base here on Maui, but our fans are kinda everywhere,” says Smith. “Our sound incorporates Island, but it’s not traditional Island. It allows our fan base to be a mixed bag.”
Doors open for the concert at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $20 in advance $25 at the door. VIP tickets are $40. And all tickets include a copy of The Throwdowns’ album. Tickets are now available at www.pipelinecafehawaii.com.
After the Pipeline performance, the group will focus its energy on a Mainland promotional tour. There also is a full-length album in the works, which they’re hoping to release this year.
“We’re really getting intricate with our arrangements,” adds Smith. “We have marathon rehearsals, and the next album is going to be more owning our sound. We started in the studio, but how much we tour will determine how fast we’ll finish.”
Don’t Slow Down also is nominated for Rock Album of the Year at this year’s Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. Good luck…
A concert of a different sort is happening this week Sunday - a benefit fundraiser for Janell Araki.
Happening from 8 to 10 p.m. at Rumours Night Club, the evening will celebrate Janell’s strength as she continues to fight calciphylaxis, a rare kidney-related disease in which calcium accumulates in small blood vessels in the skin. The disease produces purple or red lesions typically located on the lower extremities or abdomen that can develop into painful skin ulcers.
“Janell’s home now, but she has endured many operations to amputate toes and fingers,” says her husband, Darren. “On her right foot they amputated all toes and we are still waiting for the amputation site to heal after six months. On her left foot they removed her big toe and on her right hand they did a partial removal of her ring finger. Janell also continues to undergo dialysis treatments three times a week, four hours a day.”
The Arakis, owners of Precision Sound, which provides sound system services for weddings, conventions, parties and other events, have received much support from friends in the business. And this fundraiser is no different. Taking the stage in support of Janell are
Tony Silva, Mento Mele, Holunape, Pali, A Touch of Gold, The Gregg Hammer Band and Mel Fausto with Elements.
“Last year we were in the hole about $60,000, but due to generous donations and our other fundraisers we are now about $30,000 in debt,” says Darren. “Right now, with her wound-care products we spend about $400 to $500 out of pocket, and that does-n’t include medication and doctor co-payments.”
