Amy Hanaiali’i Gilliom is back in the swing of things after giving birth to her first child, daughter Madeline Uale`a oka o`ka Mahina Tikehu Austin, 18 months ago. The popular Hawaiian singer has already recorded a new album and is performing next week at Michel’s before she jets off for a New York concert.
Fans can catch Gilliom at Michel’s at the Colony Surf Oct. 2-5, at 9 p.m. each night. The MidWeek cover girl from November 1997 will perform songs from her Generation USA album, due out next spring. Joining her at Michel’s is Matt Catingub, guitarist Steve Jones, ukulele player Jeff Peterson and David “Chino” Montero.
“The main thing about Michel’s is I just want my fan base to feel comfortable and come and support because I’m doing totally different material,” she says.
“My producer Allen Sviridoff was Rosemary Clooney’s manager for 30 years. It was an absolute joy to work with him on this project. It was really really hard vocals on this project. Hawaiian music I’m more used to; this, the phrasing was so intricate, such different phrasing from Hawaiian (music),” Gilliom continues.
Catingub, Peterson and Jones are joining Gilliom when she heads to New York City to play at Feinstein’s Club at Loews Regency Hotel Oct. 9-13. The performances have a particularly special meaning for her.
“My grandmother put on a show in New York in 1937 with Ray Kinney (a famous orchestra leader from Hawaii). When I go in to Loews, it’s going to be her 70th anniversary of being in New York. All the press in New York, they’re excited that I’m coming up because of this anniversary for my grandmother,” she says. “She was a pivotal person in my career.”
Also on the musical front, Gilliom is getting ready to release a Christmas album called A Hawaiian Christmas, and will be doing a Mainland tour to promote it.
Besides her music, Gilliom’s other loves in life are her daughter and partner John Charles Quinell Austin. Madeline is already enjoying a bit of the spotlight herself, as Mom sometimes brings her out on stage with her.
“She’s a little cutie,” says Gilliom. “From the very beginning we never really gave her a chance to act up, that’s the way I was brought up. She’s really good.”
Because of her daughter, Gilliom has taken up kickboxing lessons with local fighter Egan Inoue.
“I’m trying to get all of my baby fat off. I’ve been kickboxing, I love it so much. I get out so much aggression and stress.”
