Nordstrom, as a company, was founded and created by John W. Nordstrom and Carl Wallin. Under the tutelage of Wallin, Nordstrom learned the details of shoe repair, and not long after, the two decided to open their own shoe store, grounded on the philosophies of exceptional service, selection, quality and value.
Decades later in Hawaii, with the same philosophies and ethics as Nordstrom and Wallin, Brian Tatsumura was a stock boy, working tirelessly to gain an opportunity in sales. He would work various positions at numerous locations. Then, in 2008, Tatsumura, upon the completion and opening of Nordstrom at Ala Moana, was appointed store manager.
“I never thought I would be doing this for as long as I have, but I really enjoy it. It’s funny working here at Nordstrom because I’ve created a lot of great relationships, so I don’t think it feels as long as it really has been,” says Tatsumura, who was featured on MidWeek‘s cover Feb. 27, 2008.
Heading into his fourth year of business in Honolulu, Tatsumura is constantly driven to make sure the public’s experience at Nordstrom is pleasant, always putting the core values at the forefront.
“I am hoping the public is enjoying what we are doing. As I said, we are constantly working on merchandising and serving the public the way they would like to be serviced. We are now fully integrated online, so we can serve 24/7,” he adds. “I am really happy about that. That wasn’t the case three years ago.”
Dedicated to the public he serves, Tatsumura is encouraged to improve the service his staff provides on a daily basis.
“I look at any challenge as an opportunity, looking at how we can improve or do things better and how we can serve our customers better. There are a lot of opportunities ahead of us and we’ll just keep working at it,” he says.
If shoes are on your list this holiday season, then Tatsumura is just the person to steer you in the right direction. He has always been thrilled by shoes and by those who make them.
“Shoes are where I started, and I have to tell you, it still excites me today, especially with all the new products coming in. Manolo Blahnik and Tory Burch are two brands that continually evolve. I have been lucky. I’ve been able to see fashion come around twice,” he jokes
