You may remember Buzzy Kerbox as the handsome male model from advertisments for Ralph Lauren Polo, Salem Cigarettes and in Vogue magazine in the ‘80s, but more recently folks on Maui probably know him as their surf instructor.

The model and avid surfer, originally from Indiana, made the move to Kailua with his family at age 10, and moved on to Maui “when I got married, almost 14 years ago,” he recalls.

Along with another Hawaii model, Jamie Kealoha, Kerbox was featured on MidWeek’s cover in October 1988. These days, he is keeping busy surfing and getting his Website business up and running.

“I just closed down my surf school (at Launipuko Park, Maui),” the 49-year-old tells MidWeek via phone. “The city and county closed the location where I was teaching. There were so many schools teaching (there) and the county was giving out so many permits that it decided not to give out any more.”

Now that he’s not spending his days teaching, Kerbox has found another way to keep his passion for surfing part of his everyday routine. Combining it with his other “love,” photography, for the past two years, Kerbox has diligently been creating a website, kerbox.com (he couldn’t get his full name because it was already taken), which should be ready to go by April. The site will feature his surfing photos and slide shows, as well as items for sale, like T-shirts and more photos taken by Kerbox to hang on your wall.

“Photography is something I’ve always been doing. I’ve always had a camera and have come up with some pretty awesome images,” he says.

Another new venture for Kerbox involves his other favorite water sport, paddleboarding. This waterman is also famous for paddleboard racing from Molokai to Oahu and, in 1990 the English Channel.

“My friend and I are putting together a new nine-mile race on Maui,” he says.

When he’s not working, Kerbox and wife Kristin enjoy family time with their three sons, Kyler, Kasey and Kody. The next generation of Kerbox men seem to have already caught the modeling bug from their dad. “My littlest son (Kyler), 4 years old, did five modeling shoots in a row,” laughs the proud father. “We send his pictures in and even if he’s the wrong age they still pick him. It’s been pretty good.” Kerbox’s other sons, Kasey and Kody, also model. In fact, the whole family did a group photo shoot recently in Costa Rica.
