From the trails of a triathlon course to a music recording studio, and then onto traveling the globe, former Miss Hawaii (1999) Candes Meijide Gentry wears many hats and is certainly no stranger to practicing all of her talents.
The 29-year-old has raced in the famous Ironman World Championships in Kona, and appeared on MidWeek’s cover in February 2003 for competing in the Xterra World Championships triathlon event held on Maui, which by the way, she has continued to do until this year.
In 2005, Gentry competed in the ITU-International Triathlon Union Age Group World Championships, placing second in her age group.
“For the first time ever it was held in Hawaii,” she says. “That was cool for me to be able to do that. It was a dream come true.”
This year, she reveals, she’s decided not to race to “give my body a break,” which coincidentally has provided her with a chance to record her second CD.
A Change In Me is a follow up to her first album, Candes, which she produced and released during her year as Miss Hawaii. A Change In Me is sold exclusively online through her web site, www.candescd.com. A portion of the proceeds supports various fundraising events.
The 10-song album features an Argentine tango song and nine Broadway show tunes, one of which is a duet with Gentry’s good friend, Joey Calderone.
“I decided to do music that really speaks to me. I love going to Broadway (and) my mom is from Argentina,” she says.
The album was produced locally with Rendez-Vous Recording.
“I promote it at the various events which I participate in - charity fundraisers, weddings and conventions,” she says. “If anyone approaches me and says they’re doing a fundraiser, I tell them about my CD.”
Gentry is also using her time lately to put her UH master’s degree in business administration to good use. The Kahala resident has started working recently for one of her family’s companies in the land development industry.
Aside from racing, singing and business, traveling and spending time with family are at the top of Gentry’s list of things she likes to do.
“I love to travel so I’ve been traveling a lot. I’ve been visiting friends in Germany, Antarctica, Argentina,” she says.
“We (Candes and her mom) went to Venice this year for the carnival. My mom is a photographer. She’s just now getting into photography, putting them (her photos) onto canvas.”
