Since being crowned Miss Hawaii in 1999, Candes Meijide Gentry has found a healthy balance in each aspect of her personal and professional life. Taking after her father, developer and world champion boat racer Tom Gentry, Candes works hard as director and president of Gentry Pacific Ltd., one of her family’s real estate development companies.

Outside of the office, Gentry is still pursuing and maintaining a successful music career. Recording and producing under her own label, CMG Records, she is currently working on a contemporary dance-style album, which is expected to be released in the summer of 2012.

“I just love dance music, and luckily dance is becoming more popular as they mix rap and top 40 music into it. I wanted to give it a shot and do something a little more commercial,” says Gentry, who was featured on MidWeek‘s cover Feb. 5, 2003.

A former Ironman World Championship triathlete, Gentry continues to thrive in an active and competitive lifestyle. She returned home in November after running her first New York City Marathon, a courtesy trip she won as the first female kamaaina finisher in the 2010 Honolulu Marathon.

Keeping to Hawaii sport, Gentry recently was the ninth overall female finisher in the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship half marathon Dec. 4 at Kualoa Ranch.

“What I love about sport, especially running and now particularly trail running, is it constantly allows you to focus, to stay in shape and because it really is a lifestyle. The XTERRA course is intense, challenging and extremely rewarding. It is a really positive environment and I feel the harder the conditions, the better I perform,” she says. “I think it is important to be able to run a world championship in our own backyard.”

From the trails to the classroom, Gentry also has been recognized by the UH-Manoa Shidler College of Business as a Distinguished Leader in the Community. Graduating with a master’s degree in business administration, Gentry also helped create the Candes Meijide Gentry Endowed Scholarship for Entrepreneurship.
