Creed Chameleon

It’s been a little over two years since local hip-hop artist Creed Chameleon, aka Kris Rojas (pictured above with son Adrian, front, and his girlfriend’s son Jaithan Salvador), appeared on MidWeek‘s cover in 2006. Since then, he’s released an album, Siq of Lazy, and opened up concerts for other popular artists visiting Hawaii, including Atmosphere, Wu Tang Clan and Gym Class Heroes.

“I’ve just been doing a lot of shows,” he says, listing Pipeline, Next Door and The Loft as his regular venues. “When they do all these venues, they’re always calling me now to do the hip-hop shows.”

The 29-year-old artist was born in Guam and lived to the Philippines, Singapore, California and Virginia before coming to Hawaii at the age of 5. Though his past was a rough one, littered with gang violence, drug use and school troubles, he managed to turn it all around through his music, and become a positive influence and provide a stable upbringing for his son.

Outside of being a local hip-hop artist, Creed works a 9-to-5 job to put food on the table and pay for Adrian’s preschool education. “I’m a very busy guy,” he says. “It’s pretty tough because preschool is really expensive, and trying to get into the music business - you sacrifice a lot.”

He says although Adrian listens to and likes his music, seeing that he’s only 4 years old, he doesn’t have any plans to follow in his dad’s footsteps yet. “As far as that goes, I’m just taking things step by step,” says Creed. “If he definitely wants to get into music, then that’s something I’ll let him do. But right now he’s all into playing video games and playing with toys, just like a normal 4-year-old.”

Creed’s future plans include a Mainland tour and putting out more tracks with DJ Packo. “It’s still unknown,” he says about the content of the upcoming album. “And hopefully we’ll collaborate with other local Hawaii hip-hop artists here (too).”
