Magic is life and life is, well, magic for illusionist Franz Harary. The famed magician brings his Mega Magic: The Ultimate Spectacular show to the Hawaii Theatre from July 14 to 23.

“It’s been nine years since I was here last (for a performance),” says Harary, who was actually married in Hawaii about seven years ago.

Harary’s Oahu shows are part of his current global tour, which just brought him to Japan and then takes him to Korea following his Oahu shows. Fans can expect a combination of things that Harary thinks are “coolest” in his 12 shows over the next couple of weeks.

“Basically, the show I bring to the Hawaii Theatre is a combination of things I’ve been doing for the last five years. For me, it’s a pretty big honor to bring my own magic to this place. At the same time, it was important to do something specific for the people of Hawaii. I developed an illusion with black sand from the Big Island to try to read somebody’s mind with the sand,” Harary reveals.

“The cool thing about the Hawaii Theatre (is) for us it’s kind of a small venue. Our average audience is 5,000-10,000. This is like performing for your family. It’s going to be so close,” he adds.

The former MidWeek cover man from August 1997 also has a new television series called Magic Planet (www.magic-planettv.com) and has interactive magic tricks available on his own website.

“I’ve developed a whole series of illusions that happen to the audience by the audience. It’s a whole new way for you to do magic. At www.harary.com (is) where you go to do interactive magic. You become an instant magician. It’s the strongest thing I can do as an illusionist,” he says. “This philosophy has taken on a pretty important part of my life.”

When he’s not performing, Harary lends his illusionist talents to celebrities, developing magic shows to go along with their onstage performances. Harary intertwines a bit of the magic from a show he just finished for hip-hop artist Missy Elliott with his Hawaii Theatre act. A new “Video Tattoo” clothing line is another endeavor in which Harary has invested his time. The two-year-old line includes video embedded clothing like jackets, pants and hats.

By the way, Harary was recently nominated for an honorary doctorate from the post-secondary school he attended, Eastern Michigan University. He’s keeping his fingers crossed.
