Renowned artist and fine-art photographer Kim Taylor Reece is taking his work to a whole new dimension - reality TV. In search of the next Kim Taylor Reece model, Dancers in Paradise is a competition featuring 12 to 13 hula dancers with various dance experience and backgrounds vying for the prestigious title.
“The original idea came from John Berger of Star-Bulletin/Nite Life fame,” says Reece. “The show is going to be fun, family-oriented and very exciting to watch. I am hoping viewers will come away with a sense of the beauty of the Islands and the people who live here.”
The show is set to air at 6:30 p.m. May 30 on KITV4, hosted by Karlel Crowley of Look Hawaii Magazine.
The talented ladies, ranging in age from 21 to 26, will be judged by experts in hula, ballet and modeling, including Miss Hawaii USA Aureana Tseu, Miss Hawaii 2006 Pilialoha Gaison, choreographer Tunui Tully and latest Kim Taylor Reece model Kamakoa Page, along with Reece himself. There also will be a few guest judges with international dance credentials.
Reece appeared on MidWeek‘s cover in April 1989 and since then has captured the mystery and magic of hula through his camera lens.
“I’ve published five different art books, three on hula kahiko and one titled Wahine (nudes), which is currently sold out but can be had once in a while on eBay for around $200,” Reece explains, noting his most-recent book, The Eternal Dance, features images of exquisite ballerinas with Hawaii ties who perform across the nation and world.
This award-winning photographer has been studying hula kahiko for nearly 25 years and has been honored with 15 Pele Awards (communication and arts) as well as print magazine, Kahili (HVCB), travel journalism and national community-service awards.
“I have studied art my entire life, starting with my mother’s lessons at an early age,” Reece says. “I knew art was a calling for me as early as elementary school. I believe this creates a sense of feeling in my artwork that people respond to.”
Reece and wife Kanoe are currently in the process of developing a portfolio for Kaiser-Permanente, along with finishing the production of two 2010 calendars. He also developed a line of sculptures, which he says have become very popular with people who love Hawaii, the hula and a sense of place it creates. Reece’s talents also can be found in his own jewelry line with the help of Maui Divers Jewelry. “I have always been inspired by people, beauty, and past and present masters of art. There are emotions and feelings I get that I want to capture and share with others,” Reece exclaims. “When I experience something of beauty, I have an urge to say ‘Are you feeling this?! Isn’t it amazing?’ And instead of shouting out, I capture it through my art.”
