Larry Price, Ph.D., better known as “Price on the right,” is a veteran radio personality who brings laughs and informative news to the people of Hawaii as co-host of KSSK Radio’s Perry and Price Show. What some might not know, however, is Price’s affinity for intercollegiate athletics.

Price will be inducted into the Chaminade University Silversword Hall of Fame at the school’s second annual intercollegiate athletics gala at the Pacific Beach Hotel, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m.

“I was told of this honor by President Bernie (Brother Bernard Ploeger) over lunch at his dining room,” says Price, who in addition to his radio duties also serves as a professor-in-residence at Chaminade and as a longtime MidWeek columnist. (Also unknown to many, the generous Price donates his not-insubstantial MidWeek paychecks to fund a scholarship at Chaminade.)

“It’s very humbling,” he continues. “There are so many people more deserving.”

Price, who earned a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Southern California and completed post-doctoral work at Stanford University, has always had an interest in athletics, taking part in judo, karate, baseball, track and field, football and most recently golf. In fact, Price’s history with athletics has earned him accolades from his career with the Los Angeles Rams, and a football player and later head coach at UH-Manoa.

“Athletics are like academics,” explains Price, who also works with Oceanic Cablevision OC-16 providing commentary for high school football. “It takes commitment and a relentless pursuit of excellence. In athletics, you want to be on the first team - to be the best, then turn professional if you can.

“You learn quickly in athletics that you can’t do anything by yourself. It takes a team - so teamwork is important to embrace.”

And who to know more about the importance of teamwork other than Price himself. He last appeared on MidWeek‘s cover in Aug. 2008, having recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of the popular Perry and Price Show. Price works alongside Michael W. Perry six days a week, Monday through Friday, from 5 to 10 a.m. on 92.3 FM and Saturdays from 8 to 11 a.m. live at Jimmy Buffett’s at the Beachcomber in the Ohana Waikiki Beachcomber hotel.

For Price, you can say athletics and broadcasting go hand in hand. “After I retired from athletics at UH, Cecil Heftel offered me a job as a reporter and backup for (radio legend) J. Akuhead Pupule,” recalls Price. “It was exciting because I didn’t know anything about broadcasting or television. It was starting over from the bottom, like being a water boy again.”

Now, all Price has to do to remind himself that his days as a water boy are long gone is glance at the Silversword Hall of Fame.

The gala supports Chaminade’s Athletic Department and student-athletes through funding for athletic programs, travel opportunities and equipment. For more information on the gala and Chaminade athletics, visit www.goswords.com or call 735-4764.
