In 2004, after 40 years in the Honolulu Police Department, Lee Donohue retired as chief, and has since been working as director of security for Securitas Security Services. He takes pride in the responsibility to discuss with clients the specific, customized services Securitas provides for each business or organization.
“I meet with clients and provide leadership for branch managers in terms of special needs,” says Donohue, who also is a seventh degree black belt in karate. “I work to keep communication open, helping to keep everything running smoothly, keeping everyone happy.”
In July 2010, Donohue was selected out of 27 viable candidates to replace Charles Djou to represent City Council District 4 (Ala Moana to Hawaii Kai), a position he has enjoyed.
“It has been a great experience. From the law side, I was the one enforcing the laws, and now in the council position I am lobbying laws. So it is kind of an opposite experience,” says Donohue, who adds he is very proud of pushing through the consumer fireworks ban that will go into effect in January 2011.
Donohue, who appeared on the cover of MidWeek in July 1998, would like to see the City Council focus its attention in 2011 on budget issues and the Asia-Pacific Economic Conference (APEC) to be held next November on Oahu.
He says he would not rule out a run for city councilman after his term expires Jan. 2, but adds that he has no future political ambitions.
He does commend everyone working within the City Council. “There are a lot of great people here who hold the city’s welfare at heart,” say Donohue, who still works very closely with youth and community groups. He continues to run the Kick Start Karate program designed to encourage at-risk students to pursue higher education (see Page 51), and was recently appointed to Saint Louis School’s board of trustees.
