Makaha Sons
The Makaha Sons, aka brothers John and Jerome Koko and their “uncle” Moon Kauakahi, are keeping busy these days, since appearing on MidWeek‘s cover in April of 2002. “Emperor” Jerome (center, above), “King” John (left) and “General” Moon (right), as they are known on stage, have all grown from dads into grand-dads, released a “best of” album in 2005 and, more recently, are gearing up for their BIG show at the Blaisdell.
“Family and friends are doing great,” says Jerome. “We’ve (he and wife Yolanda) just became grandparents, and that granddaughter of mine ... keeps us real busy.”
For brother John, his eldest boy, 26-year-old John Jr., is in the Air Force and stationed in California. His twin sons, Jerman and Jordon, 18, are hard-working college students, while 16-year-old Jerry, his youngest, will be a junior at Kamehameha Schools in the fall. John and wife, Toni, are as happy as ever.
“My wife was the 2006 Sports Illustrated cover model ... oh, wait, sorry, I just woke up!” jokes John. “All kidding aside, my wife is fine and helps me with everything. (Also) I have a new puppy (Rottweiler). Her name is Magic.”
Like Jerome, “General” Moon enjoys spending time with his grandchildren when the trio is not performing. “Watching them enjoy themselves the way only children can makes me feel young again, or at least, in thought,” reveals Moon. “I just love to spoil them rotten.”
This year’s annual Take A Walk In The Country concert is significant as it celebrates the group’s 30th anniversary together. As John says, “we worked real hard to get this far,” adding that he hopes for another 30 years of loyal fan support.
“To me this year marks 30 years of endurance in the ever-changing style of the music of Hawaii,” adds Moon. “It is my hope that the people attending this concert can feel a bit more comfortable with our style of music and leave with a bit of Makaha Sons history.”
The show happens Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The night starts off with a buffet dinner and special guest performances by the Brothers Cazimero, Ho`okena, Hapa, Aunty Genoa, Na Kama, Barry Kimokeo and a host of others. The Makaha Sons take the stage last to top off the extravaganza.
What should fans expect at the show? All three Nanakuli natives agree fans are in store for an evening of fun and surprises.
“Fun, lots of music, fun, hula, fun, lots of surprises, fun, food, fun and more fun,” says John.
