Matt Catingub is celebrating his 10th anniversary as conductor of the Honolulu Symphony Pops this year, and will be honored at jazz pianist and singer Diana Krall’s Toyota Pops concerts at 8 p.m. March 19 and 20 at Blaisdell Concert Hall. Ticket prices range from $45 to $125.
“Much of this is a surprise to me, but some very important guest artists will be joining me the night of the concerts and performing as well,” says Catingub, a Grammy award-winner for his contribution to the soundtrack of the movie Good Night, and Good Luck. “On top of that, we all get to enjoy one of our dearest friends to the Honolulu Symphony Pops, making her long-awaited return, Diana Krall.”
Catingub appeared on MidWeek‘s cover in February 2007 featuring his orchestra’s 11-day, six-venue music festival “Return to Romance.” Since then he’s been gearing up and preparing for the next Honolulu Symphony Pops season and guest conducting for several orchestras across the nation. Catingub also has several recording productions in the works.
A lover of jazz and music in general, the Los Angeles native finds a sense of joy in his work. He took to the stage at age 15 and has not looked back. “Music is my passion, and it’s my hobby,” explains Catingub, whose mother is legendary jazz singer Mavis Rivers. “I am the luckiest person in the world to do what I do. To be able to share (music) with and through our wonderfully loyal concert-goers, as well as the marvelous musicians of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra Pops, is something I try not to take for granted and am appreciative of every day.”
Catingub has much to be proud of musically, and says the Honolulu Symphony Pops continues to be the most important part of his artistic life. “Creating the Pops 10 years ago was a dream come true, and I am thrilled that to this day the community has responded as well as they have,” Catingub says, reflecting back on his many accomplishments.
“I would like to see the Honolulu Symphony Pops grow beyond the walls we have established,” he adds. “I still feel that there are more unique areas to discover for all of us.”
It’s not too late to catch the final Pops concerts for the season scheduled April 24 and 25 with Latin music star Poncho Sanchez, and May 23 with smooth jazz wizard Dave Koz.
