Lead singer of The Pussycat Dolls, songwriter, actress and solo artist, Nicole Scherzinger has topped charts with smash hits like Stickwitu, Don’t Cha, Buttons and more. Now she’s topping the leader board once again - this time as a contestant on season 10 of ABC’s hit show Dancing with the Stars.
“I’m really excited about it. It’s been an awesome experience so far,” says Scherzinger, who’s currently based in Los Angeles working with professional dance partner Derek Hough to perfect her weekly dance routines.
“I’ve been learning so much in rehearsals every day with Derek. It’s been a challenge, but just an awesome opportunity for me to learn something that I’ve never done before and to challenge myself - it’s been a lot of fun,” she adds.
Born in Honolulu and raised in Louisville, Scherzinger was asked to join The Pussycat Dolls after being recognized from her success on the TV show Popstars and with the group Eden’s Crush. In the meantime, she also has taken it upon herself to branch out on her own.
And although this local girl admits that she has had some dance training in the past, the world of ballroom has been a new experience.
“Being in theater arts, I learned some dance and stuff there, but as far as ballroom dancing, this world is foreign to me and everything is brand new. It’s kind of like learning how to walk again.”
Having already danced the Viennese Waltz, Quickstep and Rumba, Scherzinger is excited for what the rest of the season has in store, learning new dances and pushing herself to stronger performances. But what she’s most excited about, she says, is being able to perform and connect with the audience on a different level.
“I like to challenge myself, but I’m also scared because I don’t have my voice and I’m always on stage with my voice,” she admits. “That’s how I connect best with people, and it’s interesting, now I just have to try to connect through dance.”
Scherzinger appeared on MidWeek‘s cover in June 2009 during the PCD Domination Tour at Blaisdell Arena, and says she’s been back home quite a few times since then.
“What I miss most about Hawaii is my ohana and the Hawaiian air. I’ve been all around the world and gone on tour so many times, and yet I’ve never been anywhere that has the sweet smell of Hawaii,” she says.
This Pussycat Doll turned ballroom dancer has already noticed a significant difference in her posture and stance from being on the show, yet, she says, making music is and always will be her first love.
“Every day after I finish rehearsal with Derek I go to the studio and record. I never stop working on my music,” says Scherzinger, who in the next couple of months hopes to have a single released that will get everybody dancing.
“I just want to give my love to my family and hopefully I’ll make Hawaii proud. And don’t forget to vote for your local girl!”
