To vacation is to escape the hectic pace of the world around you - to unwind and enjoy precious time with those who are a part of who you are. A getaway should be enhanced by the surroundings and atmosphere in which you and your loved ones stay.

Patricia Tam has dedicated 27 years to the Hotels & Resorts of Halekulani, working with her fellow employees to help ensure that each guest’s time is filled with intrinsic enjoyment, laughs and relaxation.

“The topping to the satisfaction of my position is creating and maintaining these memorable experiences for guests so that they may realize a positive difference in their lives,” says Tam, who was featured on MidWeek‘s cover Aug. 7, 1996.

Tam says Hotels & Resorts of Halekulani, which includes Halekulani and the sister Waikiki Parc Hotel, is guided by a simplistic philosophy that helps separate them from the hundreds of hotels and resorts that encompass Hawaii’s tourism.

“We stand committed to protecting the guest services experience that has been the backbone of our DNA over these many years,” Tam adds. “People are constantly surprised and delighted that, as an independent hotel, we still have the international reputation that we do, even though we swim in an ocean with so many other brands.”

Tam started her venture at Hotels & Resorts of Halekulani as a hotel assistant and eventually grew to be general manager of first Waikiki Parc Hotel and then Halekulani. She now works in the corporate offices as vice president of brand development, constantly learning and applying that knowledge she receives from each employee as she implements and shapes the values that Hotels & Resorts of Halekulani upholds.

“It is all about learning every day from each other. Learning is the truest version of on-the-job training. After 27 years I am still learning too, whether from a housekeeping maid, busboy or our COO,” she says.

Tam acknowledges that professionally it is easy for her to lose the balance between her work and family life, but she knows that if it wasn’t for their support, she wouldn’t be able to lead in the capacity that she does today.

“In my case, my parents and siblings were always very supportive of my job. That support has helped me find a balance between my work and personal life, although I always seem to lean more toward the work life.”

As a community enterprise, Halekulani is currently lending a hand to those suffering in Japan.

On April 21, Halekulani and Nobu Waikiki present Culinary Artists for the Japan Relief Effort. This culinary event will take place at Halekulani’s Hau Terrace from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. For reservations, donations and additional information, call 931-5040.
