Many hairstyles like the ‘70s shag and the big hair of the ‘80s have come and gone in the last 40 years, but through the fashionable changes Paul Brown Salons and Spas has rolled with the trends, standing as a veteran leader in Hawaii’s salon, spa and haircare industry.
“I was just thinking on my morning speed walk how lucky I am to work in Hawaii. There have been times in my career where I said if I stayed in New York or went to Europe, I may be a bigger player, but I am so happy here. I enjoy every day and have a passion that hasn’t gone away in 40 years,” says Brown, who still works one-on-one with clients four days a week.
Brown also has transitioned that passion to giving back, servicing many projects such as providing staff and support to programs at St. Baldrick’s Foundation and the American Cancer Society’s Camp Anuenue. Brown’s newest philanthropic venture stems from his Operation Makeover campaign, which dedicates a day and evening of beauty, luxury and relaxation to the deserving men and women of our military. Partnering with the Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA), Brown projects to expand Operation Makeover on a national level with plans to care for and pamper 1,000 servicemembers a month.
“We need to do a better job of taking care of our military. A lot of them are kids who are over there. It is horrendous what they go through, so we have to do a better job when they come home. This program started out from a story moved by emotion, and has turned into a passion,” adds Brown who was featured on MidWeek‘s cover Dec. 26, 2001. “This is my big gig right now. It is fun and rewarding. The letters we receive are remarkable.”

Also partnering with Honolulu Star-Advertiser‘s HonoluluPulse, Brown is creating the New Faces of Paul Brown Model Search Contest, which is set to begin mid-October. Open to men and women 14-25 years old, four winners will be the faces of Paul Brown for one year.
