Regina Kaaihili appeared on MidWeek‘s cover along with her sister, Kelly, in February of 1999. The senior and freshman (respectively) were the Rainbow Wahine’s “softball sisters,” under Coach Bob Coolen. Nearly nine years later, Regina is now the pharmacy manager at Hawaii’s new Walgreens store.
She was welcomed to her position by Gov. Linda Lingle in a Nov. 1 grand opening ceremony: “Walgreens ... means bringing back our keiki o ka’aina back home,” said the governor. “It is great to see two local people, Regina Kaaihili and Clark Fujihara, who came back home and now work in the pharmacy department.”
After leaving the University of Hawaii, Regina moved to California.
“I was at UH for five years and when I left, I went away to pharmacy school at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif.,” recalls Regina.
She took an accelerated program and managed to get her doctorate in pharmacology in just three years, instead of going through the usual four-year program.
While at UOP, Regina began working at Walgreens as a pharmacist and continued working there after completing graduate school.
“I lived in California for five years,” says Regina. “I came back home like two years ago, and I was working full time with Kaiser, part time at Longs.”
As if her new management job isn’t excitement enough, Regina has more big news.
“I got married on Sept. 8,” announces the new Mrs. Teramoto. “We went on our honeymoon and when I came back, I started with Walgreens.”
The softball player is also an avid golfer. For the honeymoon, she and her “local boy” husband went golfing at Pebble Beach, and then spent some time in New York. Her husband, Ryan, is from Waimanalo, and the two now live together in Aina Haina.
Though Regina doesn’t play softball much anymore, she brushed up on her skills on Nov. 16 when the Rainbow Wahine alumnae played against UH’s current varsity. Her former coach, Coolen, is in his 17th season of heading up the Wahine.
Meanwhile, the pursuit of health care seems to run in the family, as sister Kelly is now a nurse. She lives in Mililani with her husband and two children - a 2-year-old boy and a 3-month-old girl.
