You may remember her for slow-motion runs down the beach and her uncanny ability to save a drowning person while making it look good on TV. Stacy Kamano, formerly Kekoa Tanaka of Baywatch Hawaii, will be back in the Islands to compete in the 70.3 Half Iron Man competition - the same course as the regular Iron Man, but half the distance - at the end of May.
“I’m very excited about it and very nervous,” Kamano says. “But it’s a goal of mine, and the main thing is to finish (she laughs) - that’s the main thing.”
Kamano also says she is excited to come back to Hawaii, and though she misses it she is committed to staying in California where there’s work.
“That would be great if work could bring me back to Hawaii,” she says. “But I come back often enough because my family still lives there. So every chance I can, I come back, especially for the holidays.”
Kamano graced MidWeek‘s cover in October of 1999, the first year of the Baywatch spin-off. “Just starting up the show (was the highlight of the time),” she says. “It was amazing and fantastic. I still keep in touch with most of the cast members, especially Brandy Ledford.” She also mentions that she still talks to Jason Momoa.
The Baywatch franchise ended in Hawaii in 2001 after an 11-year run on TV. The show is still regarded by fans as one of the most-watched programs all over the world. The cast was united one more time in 2005 for a Baywatch movie, but since then, according to Kamano, there has been nothing else in the works. “That was nice to come back and shoot the movie at Turtle Bay,” she says.
Since then, Kamano has been involved in several projects in California, ranging from hosting shows to soap operas to fitness modeling. “Now I’m pursuing my passion with this new adventure of mine,” Kamano says, referring to the upcoming triathlon. But in terms of her entertainment career, Kamano is waiting for a reality TV show deal to go through. And even though she isn’t willing to say what the show is or what her role will be, she is still excited to do it. “I really don’t know what to expect,” she says, citing that most of what happens on such programs is unscripted. “It’s going to be as much of a surprise to me as to everyone else.”
