Hawaii’s former first lady and queen of laundry Vicky Cayetano has seen many changes in the laundry service industry, including United Laundry Services’ recent expansion to Kona.
“I am still doing laundry,” Cayetano remarks with a laugh. “I think like many industries and even in laundry, it has become more complicated, but some of it is good, as more regulations pertaining to the environment are coming up, which I support.”
What Cayetano, as president and CEO, treasures about United Laundry Services is its constant emphasis on people, whether customers or employees. “I really value relationships. We put a high value on that and really keep that a focus in our corporate philosophy,” says Cayetano, who graced MidWeek‘s cover June 30, 1999.
As former Gov. Ben Cayetano’s (pictured above) wife, she continues to apply herself and lends a hand in the community. Most notably, Cayetano is working with Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children’s Capital Campaign program, which is an initiative to expand the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. “It will expand the actual area for our NICU patient facilities, parking and access for our community,” she says. “It is a very important cause in order to serve not only the children of the state of Hawaii, but really throughout the Pacific region as well.”
Cayetano’s life has always been filled with music, as the sounds would float throughout her childhood home. She is a member of the Symphony Exploratory Committee working to reintroduce the delight of orchestral music back into Hawaii’s community. “We are making good progress, and have just engaged Steve Monder, who spent 37 years with the Cincinnati Symphony, as our president, and he is going to lead the charge so we can announce our season,” she says.
Offering a few words of advice, Cayetano says, “Find balance - it is important to find balance today between work and family. Enjoy every minute of what you do in life, because I am 55 now and life goes by really fast.”
For the Cayetanos, balance includes playing with their 10 dogs.
