A Connection Grows With Sendai
Del.icio.usIt started in 1992, when Coline Aiu led her Halau O Maiki to perform at the Sendai Tanabata Matsuri Festival in Japan. On that occasion, the hula halau named for Aiu’s legendary mother, Maiki Aiu Lake was gifted with five tall tanabata, and a connection was formed. Fast forward 19 years, and the coastal town of Sendai is still devastated from the March tsunami. And as Aiu was preparing for the halau’s annual celebration of Maiki (at her alma mater St. Francis School), she learned that a group of students from Sendai Ikuei Gakuen High School was visiting Honolulu. An invitation was graciously offered and gladly accepted, and the ties between a halau and a town were strengthened.
