Commemorating Historic WWII Day
In front of Iolani Palace, on March 28, World War II veterans of the 100th Infantry Battalian, 442nd Regimental Combat Team and Military Intelligence Service gathered to receive congressional honors and to commemorate an unforgettable day in history. In 1943, on the same date and at the same place, the community bid farewell to the Japanese-American soldiers as they deployed for battle.
Among the veterans present were Rev. Yoshiaki Fujitani (MIS), Takejiro Higa (MIS), Harry Fukuhara (MIS), Frank Tanabe (MIS), Goro Sumida (100th), Sonsei Nakamura (100th), Robert Takashige (100th), Tom Tsubota (100th) and Robert Arakaki (100th). Also present was William Thompson of the 442nd, leading a group that includes Yasunobu Shoho, Moriso Teraoka, Robert Uyeda, Mitsuo Honda, Charles Ijima, Doc Kawamoto, Fujio Matsuda, Paul Watanabe, Takashi Shirakata, Masayuki Higa, Joe Obayashi, Masao Nakakura, Seigo Nago, Henry Kuniyuki, Yoshikatsu Maruo, Joe Oshiro, Genro Kashiwa, James Oura, Masao Fujioka, Ron Oba and Satoru Shikasho.
