The Hawaii Chinese Civic Association Mandarin Ball
The Hawaii Chinese Civic Association held its annual gala Mandarin Ball at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel recently. The association recognized Susanna F. Cheung, president and CEO Opportunities for the Retarded Inc. (and its affiliate Helemano Plantation) as its Mandarin for 2005. The distinction was given in recognition of her leadership and service to the community in serving adults with developmental disabilities/mental retardation and those who have special needs. There was also a Mandarin jacket contest where contestants modeled jackets both new and some more than a century old. The HCCA was founded in 1925 with the purpose of encouraging its members to exercise the prerogatives of American citizenship, foster civic progress in the community and cultivate tolerance and goodwill.
