Its name means “the road to happiness,” and eating at Doraku Sushi, you’ll feel like you’re well on your way to that destination. With one location in South Beach (it’ll celebrate its seventh anniversary in November), Doraku combines traditional Japanese restaurant items (nigiri sushi, sushi rolls, sashimi, robata-yaki) with tropical-style Latin flavors (think Cuban, South American) for a twist on sushi like no other Japanese restaurant here in Honolulu. Doraku features a combination of traditional sushi restaurant and Japanese items (spider roll, chicken teriyaki, beef or ahi tataki, and eggplant miso), along with specialty fusion items such as the Cuban beef roll, Churrasco steak, robata-yaki with Brazilian-style chimichurri sauce, and ceviche. The perfect spot for traditionalists as well as the adventurous, Doraku has something for every level of sushi enthusiast. Monthly sake tastings include an amazing array of appetizer selections from the menu as well as sushi, paired with at least four different sakes. Priced at $40, these tastings are sure to become a hot ticket. Please contact Doraku directly for details. For dessert, don’t miss the homemade brownie tempura. After trying it for ourselves, SMART is pretty sure that there should be a picture of this dessert in the dictionary under “decadent.”
