Allison Izu Premium Petite Denim
Wednesday - March 04, 2009
At a petite 5 ft. 2 in. in height, Allison Izu Song has a hard time finding clothes that fit her body properly.
Fortunately for her, as a designer, she can easily take the clothing she purchases home and alter them to fit her. However, she says she’s still able to see where it doesn’t fit, especially in pants and at the knee break.
“I realized if I was having this problem, other petite women must be having the same problem,” says Song on what made her decide to start her own clothing line.
Song, 32, is a 1994 graduate of Sacred Hearts Academy. She attended the University of Hawaii and later transferred to Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, where she graduated in 1998.
In 2004, she began creating her own petite fit patterns, researched the market and looked for manufacturers and fabrics.
“I thought denim would be an easy beginning for the brand since I could purchase one fabric and treat it in different ways to obtain different results,” she explains. “But I soon realized that it was one of the most difficult sectors in fashion because of its need to fit well on different bodies.”
The journey took longer than expected, but in 2008, Song finally launched her first line of premium petite denim.
“Petite is basically about height: Being 5’4” and shorter,” says Song. “So my line creates clothing in a size running from 000 to 10 and in two inseams, 27” and 31”, to try to accommodate most inseams.”
Featured here are items from Allison Izu’s new Spring 2009 line as well as some styles from her basics line. Her clothes are manufactured in California, and she uses fabrics from the U.S., Italy and Japan.
