Anne Namba At Madame Butterfly
Wednesday - June 17, 2009
Award-winning fashion designer Anne Namba has created 120 costumes, including a spectacular cocoon-like wedding ensemble, for a new production of Giacomo Puccini’s Madame Butterfly premiering July 3 at the world-famous Savonlinna Opera Festival in Finland.
The event also showcases the talent of Henry Akina, general and artistic director for Hawaii Opera Theatre, and Dean Shibuya, architect and set designer.
Namba, Akina and Shibuya are the first creative team from Hawaii to produce an opera at Savonlinna Opera Festival, the largest European opera festival north of the Baltic. “This experience has taken me to a whole ‘nother level with costume designing,” says Namba. “I just returned from Finland, and it’s really starting to hit home. I’m starting to realize the enormity of the project because the production is coming alive now.” Featured here are fashions designed by Namba that were on view during a benefit brunch and fashion show held earlier this year at the Halekulani. The event also featured costumes, set design and arias from the new production of Madame Butterfly. Anne Namba is located at 324 Kamani St. (near Ward Avenue). Her print collection also can be found at Macy’s (Ala Moana and Downtown stores) and in various resort boutiques.
Namba also is planning a summer show Aug. 19 at her store for the public to preview her newest collection. The event is free and takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. For more information, call 589-1135.
