Burberry Celebrates Its 150th Year
Wednesday - December 20, 2006
Burberry, an internationally recognized luxury brand with a worldwide distribution, celebrates its 150th anniversary this year with the release of limited edition watches and a special Burberry Icons Collection of handbags, shoes, belts, scarves and more.
The company was founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry, a 21-year-old draper’s apprentice who opened a small outfitters shop in Badingstoke, Hampshire, England.
Quickly, Burberry grew a reputation for his “commitment to quality and innovation in design,” and by 1870 had built a loyal following.
Later, Burberry would develop more innovative fashions, including Gabardine, the breathable weatherproof and tearproof fabric; the Tielocken, the predecessor of the trench coat; the Equestrian Knight trademark accompanied with the Latin word prorsum meaning forward, and, of course, the trademark Burberry check which was initially used as a lining to the trench coat in the 1920s.
Today, Burberry has become a favorite among celebrities and the best dressed, with its popular fashions and accessories often photographed and seen in magazines around the world.
In celebration of its 150th year, Burberry has created two limited-edition watches: a rose gold version and a stainless steel version.
Only 150 of the rose gold version is available worldwide. Features include an 18 carat rose gold-plated case and buckle, rose gold color dial with stamped check, dark brown genuine alligator strap, skeleton case back, Burberry Equestrian Knight logo engraved on the rotor, and automatic movement. Price is $1,500.
Only 520 of the stainless steel version is available worldwide. Features include: Quartz movement, stainless steel case, silver dial with stamped check, black calfskin leather strap, and Burberry Equestrian Knight logo engraved on the back. Price is $695.
Both watches are made in Switzerland.
Featured here are some pieces from Burberry’s Spring/Summer 2007 collection.
On Oahu, Burberry is located at Ala Moana Center and in Waikiki (298 Beach Walk).
