Chelsea Gines started cutting her shirts when she was 12 years old. Now, at age 18, her Custom Cut Clothing are top sellers at her mom’s Ward boutique Pink C, and a must-have for any woman wanting something sexy, stylish and hip.
“I dance for Hypersquad and we would have uniforms for our concerts, and I would always cut mine up,” says Gines, who was born and raised in Kapolei. “People started asking me to cut theirs and after a while I decided to start charging them, and they still wanted it.”
At that time she was 14 and charged her fellow dancers only $10. But as more and more people discovered her intricate designs, the demand only grew — and quickly. Now, her popular custom-cut tops sell for $85 and up. And to date, she has made and sold more than 400 creations.
“I describe my tops as glam rock — it’s girly, rock ’n’ roll and chic,” says Gines, who is also the buyer and floor manager at Pink C. “It takes me anywhere from 15 minutes up to a full day to make a top. And I have customers as young as high school girls to 50-year-old ladies. It just depends on how you wear it. I can make it more revealing or more conservative.”
On Oahu, Chelsea Gines Custom Cut Clothing can only be found at Pink C. Starting July, it will also be available at Bahama Mama in Maui. And in spring 2007, look for her custom cut swimsuits under the name Chelsea Gines for Pualani.
Gines will also be cutting shirts on stage at the Piranha Room at the Ocean Club June 24. For more information, call 591-8991.
