“Smile when you say howzit” is the motto of Do The Hula, a local clothing company created by a group of friends - Mark Bergmanis, Stan Wong and Randy Inaba.

The company offers T-shirts and fashion tees, like ringers and tank tops, for men, women and children. The shirts carry a nostalgic Hawaii theme with a hip, modern twist, and feature the company’s characters PJ, Chris and the Mahalo Bros.

“These characters also reflect our feeling that life in Hawaii should be about taking it easy, enjoying friends and family, and not taking things or ourselves too seriously,” says Bergmanis. “I have been a collector of vintage aloha shirts and Hawaii memorabilia for a long time, always enjoying the vibe these things brought back about Hawaii from a while ago. I also noticed how people respond to these images and feelings. They miss it ... the aloha spirit, the easygoing vibe of the 1960s and 1970s in Hawaii.”

Artists Mike Cueva and Kelly Hironaka helped with developing the characters and T-shirt designs for Do The Hula, which can be found in various surf shops and specialty stores in Hawaii, and online at www.dothehula.com

The website also features vintage aloha shirts, as well as reconstructed vintage tees created by Gigi Chan, a recent University of Hawaii fashion design school graduate.
