Brothers Todd and Tedd Yamanaka have added an urban culture to Kahala Mall with their new boutique Ecosystems, offering a mix of trendy, casual and fashionable apparel and accessories for men and women. “We wanted to try something different,” says Todd Yamanaka, an entrepreneur who also owns a silk screen company and works as the art director for Ainokea. “And one of our goals is to promote more local companies within our store.”

The store, which is located near Center Court in the space previously occupied by Foot Locker, offers apparel, hats, sunglasses, bags, shoes, watches and more. Brands include Element, DVS, LOST, Ezekiel, O’Neill, Matix, Mighty Fine, Goorin, Soundgirl, as well as local labels Barefoot League, Vertical Junkies and FuManChu. “We have some skate, some surf, and some art and music cultures, so the store name, Ecosystems, represents all these different elements working together in one place,” says Todd Ikeda, a 1990 graduate of Moanalua High who serves as the store’s buyer. “It’s an urban boutique without the boutique prices. For my buying I’m going to try for that Urban Outfitters look, but with a local flair.

“It’s a fun boutique with something for everyone and anyone. We will have some of the well-known name brands that people will recognize, but I think they’ll be surprised at how fashionable some of them can be.” Ecosystems opened on the day after Thanksgiving. A grand opening celebration is still in the works and is expected to take place in January or February. For more information, call 737-0282.
