Global Village
Wednesday - August 23, 2006
It’s a one-must-stop shop at Global Village in Kailua where you can create a complete head-to-toe look from its racks of celebrity favorite apparel, beads, jewelry and gifts from around the globe.
The local family business, headed by Sharrie Ah Chick and daughters Debbie and Dawn Ah Chick, turned 11 this year with a continuing growth in product offerings and clientele.
“A lot of people will come and buy an outfit, and then create a custom necklace or earrings to match their outfit at our Bead Bar,” notes Debbie. “Sometimes they’ll come in with pictures or they just tell us what they want to make. Then they pick out their beads. We lend them the tools, instruct them, and they make it themselves. Depending on the beads, a pair of earrings can range from $3 to about $50.”
Global Village began as a bead kiosk in Windward Mall before moving to Kuulei Road in Kailua with an addition of apparel to its product line. In 1999, the store relocated to the Kailua Village Shops at 539 Kailua Road (near Jamba Juice and Starbucks), and two years ago expanded to double its size.
Now, the store offers clothing for women, men and keiki, as well as a huge selection of must-have accessories and gifts. Brands include Spanx, XCVI, Pay it Forward charm bracelets, Havaianas, Lucy Love, Indah, American Apparel, Sbicca, Rusty and Scrapbook.
“The store has just kind of evolved,” says Debbie. “When we started, Dawn and I had just finished college and we did beads because it was popular when we were in college, and it just expanded from there.”
Debbie has a degree in fashion merchandising from the University of Hawaii and Dawn graduated with a degree in international studies and political science from Willamette University in Oregon. Both graduated from Kamehameha Schools (Debbie, above right, in 1987, and Dawn, left, in 1988), as did mom Sharrie (1963).
As for fall and winter trends, the Ah Chicks say it’s volume (big, cocoon volume), military (Napoleonic, hardware detailing, ornamentation, coats), layering (skinny leggings, tights), grays (charcoals, light gray tones), plaid and checks (black, white, charcoal, gray mixes), and sharp and smart (look of class, understated separates and dresses).
