Katrina Bodnyk

Katrina “Katie” Bodnyk moved to Hawaii from a small town in Indiana in 2000 to attend Hawaii Pacific University, study marine biology and learn how to surf. But after about a year, she realized she wanted to do something more creative and transferred to the University of Hawaii and enrolled in its Apparel Product Design and Merchandising program.

She graduated in 2005 and launched HI State of Mind, a “hippie chic” clothing line with each garment made out of recycled fabric to create a one-of-a-kind item for her customers.

“I used to collect vintage clothing in high school because there wasn’t much else to do in Indiana and there are lots of great thrift shops on the Mainland,” says Bodnyk, 28 and recently married (to Aaron Langford). “After moving to Hawaii, I continued my hobby as a ‘picker’ and came across an abundance of second-hand scarves with cool retro prints and colors that I was instantly attracted to.”

HI State of Mind can be found at Le Grand Marqet in Ala Moana Center and Yoganics Hawaii on the Big Island. Bodnyk also recently started a jewelry collection combining vintage jewelry with leftover scarves.
